The announcement of Pokemon Winds and Waves last month officially confirmed the development of the tenth generation of Pokemon games. While fans are thrilled about a new adventure, they’ll have to be patient – the game isn’t coming out as soon as they’d hoped. Pokemon Winds and Waves promises a delightful journey through a Southeast Asia-inspired island chain, featuring cute new starter Pokemon and the return of underwater exploration.
Rumors last year suggested the new Pokémon game, Winds and Waves, would be released around late 2026, but that’s not happening. Instead, Game Freak now plans to launch the game in 2027. While a specific release date isn’t known yet, at least we have a year to look forward to. We can expect Game Freak to share more details about Winds and Waves throughout the year, and some initial glimpses of the new generation of Pokémon (Gen 10) may arrive as early as August – though not directly through the Winds and Waves game itself. Winds and Waves isn’t the only project Game Freak is working on; Beast of Reincarnation is coming out later this year and might even offer clues about what to expect in Winds and Waves.
Beast of Reincarnation and Pokemon Winds and Waves Are Worlds Apart, but a Big Leap for Game Freak
Game Freak is famous for creating the Pokemon games, but they’ve also developed other titles like Drill Dozer, HarmoKnight, and Little Town Hero. Traditionally, Game Freak hasn’t been known for cutting-edge graphics, usually sticking to simpler designs. However, their new game, Beast of Reincarnation, is different. It features surprisingly realistic graphics and looks fantastic. This could mean that future games, like Winds and Waves, will also have much improved visuals.

Beast of Reincarnation is set to launch on August 4.
Winds and Waves Might Be a Big Upgrade From Past Pokemon Games
While Beast of Reincarnation and Winds and Waves are both developed by Game Freak, they are otherwise very different games. We’ve already seen what Winds and Waves looks like, and it’s clear it doesn’t have the same realistic graphics as Beast of Reincarnation. However, Beast of Reincarnation could still offer hints about the upcoming Pokemon game. Many features for Pokemon Winds and Waves haven’t been revealed yet, and Game Freak’s work on Beast of Reincarnation may have a significant impact on the final Pokemon title.
Considering Game Freak’s work on Beast of Reincarnation, it’s reasonable to assume they used that experience to create more detailed and visually stunning environments in Winds and Waves. The first trailer for Pokemon Winds and Waves already shows impressive water visuals and realistic physics.
The characters and Pokémon maintain their classic look, but the island setting of Pokémon Winds and Waves is where the game will really stand out. The small previews Game Freak has shared suggest that the environmental design in Winds and Waves is a significant step up from previous Pokémon games. This is also true of Beast of Reincarnation; the world Emma and Koo inhabit is stunningly beautiful, and it gives a good idea of what it will feel like to explore the islands in Winds and Waves.

Beast of Reincarnation is an Exciting Step Forward for Game Freak
For years, it’s been simple to guess what a game from Game Freak would be like, as they’ve followed a familiar pattern. However, their new game, Beast of Reincarnation, is breaking that mold in several ways. If players enjoy it, this could signal a fresh start for the developer. Surprisingly, it might not even be released on the Switch 2. Currently, it’s only confirmed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. In fact, Xbox Game Pass subscribers will be able to play it as soon as it launches. Just like its realistic graphics, the game’s release plans are also quite unexpected.
While not available at launch, Beast of Reincarnation could still come to the Nintendo Switch 2 in the future. It’s surprising the game isn’t releasing with the console, considering the close partnership between Game Freak and Nintendo. Given that Winds and Waves is exclusive to the Switch 2, many expected Beast of Reincarnation to be as well. The Switch 2 is powerful enough to run the game, but Game Freak might have decided to reach a wider player base by releasing it on other platforms.
I’m really excited for Winds and Waves, even though Game Freak hasn’t shown us much yet! Seeing how gorgeous Beast of Reincarnation looks just makes me even more eager for more previews. Honestly, as a Pokemon fan, I have so many questions! Everyone’s dying to know who the box legendaries for Winds and Waves will be – I’m hoping we’ll see them in the next trailer, but who knows when that will be. The wait might be a bit longer than some of us want, but it’s cool that Game Freak is working on another game too. It’s totally different from Pokemon, but I’m curious if they’ll use what they learn from it to make Winds and Waves look even better – especially the graphics and environments!
