In your role as a Team Rocket Grunt, you don’t have the luxury of choosing conventional starters. Instead, you are issued a Rattata, and you can opt between a Spearow or a Pidgey. Generally speaking, Pidgey is considered the superior choice among these two.

In the course of the entire game, Pidgey remains usable, and when evolved into Pidgeot, it doesn’t disappoint. Although it isn’t a Starter Pokémon, you can encounter an Eevee in Celadon City – the same city as Team Rocket’s hideout.

How to Steal Pokémon

However, this opportunity only arises when you meet certain requirements based on your Team Rocket Rank, making each capture a strategic and exciting endeavor!

Initially, you’ll only have the ability to take Pokémon from children and seniors, but as the narrative progresses, you’ll earn promotions multiple times. Eventually, you’ll gain the power to challenge not just kids and elders, but also Gym Leaders and the Elite Four!

This particular feature does present some constraints. The main problem is that it encourages players to skip Gym Battles until they reach a level where they can seize a Gym Leader’s Pokemon. I was aware of this system prior to beginning the game, and as a result, I opted not to engage with Gyms until the post-game phase, during which I could obtain any Pokemon I desired.

Gyms are Optional

Gyms serve as a valuable resource for Experience Points (EXP), particularly in the Fire Red Rocket Edition where EXP and money are not abundant. In Rocket Edition, the narrative is quite comprehensive, making it very unlikely that you’ll find yourself lost or stuck. For convenience, I’ve limited the guide to locations where you might encounter challenges and crucial battles during your journey.

Mt. Moon

If you’re familiar with the gameplay of Red and Blue, then Mt. Moon should feel quite familiar. It’s a spacious region teeming with Trainers, however, it offers an advantageous opportunity for earning Experience Points.

In Mt. Moon, you’ll face off against Red, and this particular fight stands out because you’re meant to experience a predetermined defeat. Red is expected to deploy a Level 25 Charmeleon, which could easily overpower your team. Accept this outcome, as it’s an integral part of the storyline.

Cerulean City

In Cerulean City, it’s simple to find yourself bewildered if you don’t pay attention to conversations. To progress the plot, make sure to visit the Daycare Center located to the south and chat with everyone there. This place has a darker atmosphere than in the typical main series games.

After completing your tasks, make your way northward across the bridge towards Bill’s house. Keep in mind that the five Trainers on this bridge are particularly strong compared to the Pokémon you’ll have at this stage. Their teams aren’t extraordinary, but be prepared for potential underleveling if you’ve skipped some battles along the way.

Between each battle, feel free to head back to the Pokémon Center for recovery, and once you’ve crossed the bridge, don’t forget to explore the western grasslands. In order to face off against Mr. Fuji’s Marowak, it may be necessary for you to battle against some nearby wild Pokemon first as its Pokemon are quite strong. This will help prepare you for the challenge.

After defeating Mr Fuji and receiving your initial promotion, Grunt, or perhaps you could call it Admin now, your next stop will be in Pallet Town, located to the west.

Pallet Town

Instead of finding the Professor in the lab, you should investigate the town. It’s uncertain what will set things off, but wait for Agatha to show up, as her presence will somehow bring Professor Oak into view.

Pallet Town: Showdown with Blue’s Sister

When you visit Blue’s house, his sister will challenge you, and she’s no joke:

In this scenario, a Cubone or robust Marowak from the Pokémon Tower proves incredibly effective, taking out three of Daisy’s Pokémon using Ground-type attacks. If you aren’t ready for it, brace yourself for a challenging struggle ahead.

Return to Giovanni, and you’ll earn HM03 Surf. Your next destination is Cinnabar Island.

How to get a Water Pokémon in Fire Red Rocket Edition

You will need a Water Pokémon to reach Cinnabar Island, and chances are you don’t have one yet. If you’re desperate, head to Mt. Moon Pokémon Center to buy a Magikarp for 500G.

To make it evolve into Gyarados, it needs to be trained up to level 20 first. However, you can start teaching it the move ‘Surf’ when it reaches level 20.

Among the most powerful Pokemon attainable for Team Rocket members, Gyarados is certainly a valuable acquisition, despite the effort required to level it up being considerable.

Instead, consider transforming your Eevee into a Jolteon using a Thunder Stone, as I found my Jolteon to be much more effective than a Water Stone-transformed Eevee.

Cinnabar Island

You’re here to confront Blaine. He isn’t hiding in the Gym but in the Pokémon Mansion instead.

Showdown with Blaine

Rapidash realizes that Inferno and Blaine’s Pokemon deal extra damage with their Fire-type attacks, but a good Water-type Pokemon could easily overwhelm its team.

As a devoted fan, I’d say, “If you’ve managed to catch a Magikarp and evolved it into a powerful Gyarados, you could potentially overpower Blaine’s entire team using the Surf move! Remember, keep an eye on your PP level to ensure you can use this skill effectively.

Silph Building (Saffron City)

As someone who has spent countless hours exploring the vast world of Pokémon, I must say that this particular area is a colossal, towering structure with no less than eleven floors! Swarming with trainers, it can be quite a challenge, but fear not! My personal strategy when venturing here is to retreat and heal at the Pokemon Center whenever my Pokemon’s health or PP levels dip too low. It’s always better to be prepared and come back stronger than to push through and risk losing valuable team members. Trust me; I speak from experience!

Bill, a die-hard Pokémon fan, has proven himself to be the most formidable opponent yet in battles, requiring you to train extensively to match his Pokémon’s strength. Moreover, don’t be surprised if he frequently uses Hyper Potions excessively during the fights.

Challenge Pokemaniac Bill

Porygon spammed Curse and Discharge during my fight and didn’t transform. With this in mind, it may be a good idea to put Marowak at the front of your team if you have one. Pinsir also hits obnoxiously hard with Thrash.

Following your confrontation with Bill, you are now elevated to the rank of Team Rocket Executive, granting you permission to snatch Pokémon from practically everyone, excluding Gym Leaders and the Elite Four. Additionally, you will acquire the Crowbar Key Item.

How to use the Crowbar in Pokémon Fire Red Rocket Edition

Use the crowbar to unlock any closed door, but make sure to follow a certain procedure. First, position yourself on the tile right in front of the shut door. Then, open your inventory and choose the Crowbar. Once you’ve done that, simply walk through as usual.

There are no prompts reminding you the mechanic works this way, so keep that in mind.

How to Beat Mewtwo

From what I know, participating in the Mewtwo battle is compulsory and it’s surprisingly tough, surpassing any other challenge within the game. Similar to the original versions, you can reach this location from Cerulean City.

Traverse the bridge and glide over the western waters (where you previously encountered an Abra), and you’ll stumble upon a Level 70 Mewtwo residing within a cavern. As anticipated, it packs quite a punch, much like a speeding locomotive.

To put it straightforwardly, I honed my skills in a cave at three times the normal pace while multitasking, trying to approach Mewtwo. By the way, your foe is aware of the moves: Reflect, Barrier, Calm Mind, and Psychic.

My most effective plan involved initiating the battle by summoning a Ghost-type creature while Mewtwo was fortifying its defenses. Then, I proceeded to unleash every Status Ailment at my disposal. Luckily, Mewtwo had no recovery items, so all I needed to do was defeat it once to secure the victory.

Victory Road

You’ve almost reached the end of the game’s primary tale. As I noted at the beginning of this guide, I chose to skip the Gyms until after the main game. While I can’t guarantee it, if you don’t mind not capturing Gym Leader Pokémon, you might be able to begin those challenges now if you need experience points. It’s peculiar, but visiting Fuchsia City seems to initiate the Gym questline.

Showdown with Lance

Lance’s Pokemon are quite powerful, but at this stage, my Gyarados has acquired the skill called “Ice Fang,” which can handle Dragonair, Kingdra, and Dragonite. Since an Electric type is four times more effective against Gyarados, it might be wise to start your team with an Electric Pokemon.

Without excessively focusing on leveling up your characters through endless battles, you’ll likely need to lean on the advantages of types, as Professor Oak is challenging yet beatable with a varied and well-rounded team.

As a gamer, I held off on my journey until I was fully promoted to take on the Gyms and snag whatever loot I fancied. Granted, if one prefers, they could challenge these Gym Leaders earlier, but it’s essential to start at Fuchsia City, as you’ll need a Trainer Pass Key Item to proceed.

Discuss with Koga at Fuchsia City Gym. He tells you that no one is challenging his gym because they can’t find the HM Surf in the Safari Zone, a clever reference to the classic games, and our next destination happens to be there.

You can also get a Level 50 Ditto if you revisit Professor Oak’s underground Lab in Pallet Town.

How to enter the Safari Zone

As a gamer, I’d say: “Alright, let’s set course for Fuchsia City. Once there, I’ll take a northern route towards the Safari Zone, but they won’t let me in. No worries though, I’ve got a plan B! I’ll swing by the house that’s right beside the Pokémon Center instead.

To obtain the Gold Teeth Key Item, quietly move towards the Warden without being noticed, then approach him from behind.

Head back to the Safari Zone with the captured teeth, and you’ll receive permission to enter the hidden residence located in the northwest area.

Head back to Fuchsia City Gym, bringing what you’ve collected along, and you’ll be rewarded a Trainer Pass and the privilege to battle any gym in this region. Feel free to take them on in any sequence you prefer, but seeing as we’re here now, let’s begin with Koga first.
