Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Player Beats the Elite Four Using Nothing But Baby Pokemon

Beating the Elite Four again in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen is famously difficult, but one player recently accomplished it with a team made up entirely of first-stage Pokemon – the ‘baby’ forms. FireRed and LeafGreen, which were originally released on Game Boy and recently re-released on Nintendo Switch in February, are remakes of the classic games. While mostly staying true to the originals, the remakes also include features from later Pokemon games.

A significant addition in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen is a whole new area to discover: the Sevii Islands. Players unlock access to these islands near the end of the main story, and can fully explore them after becoming champion by defeating the Elite Four. There’s plenty to do afterward, including the chance to find the legendary Pokemon Raikou, Entei, and Suicune by completing tasks throughout the islands.

Beating the Best With Baby Pokemon

The Elite Four in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are already a difficult challenge, but become even harder after players explore the Sevii Islands, as the Pokemon League rematch features stronger Pokemon. One player, Reddit user CannedHeatt_, decided to make things even more challenging by battling the League with a team of only ‘Baby’ Pokemon – Pichu, Cleffa, Magby, Igglybuff, Tyrogue, and Smoochum. While these Baby Pokemon weren’t available until the Gold and Silver games, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen do include several Pokemon from that generation.

Baby Pokémon are generally quite weak, and CannedHeatt_ shared that they needed to train their Pokémon to a higher level than usual because their first attempt was difficult. While they didn’t share the specific levels or moves used, players should be aware of the effort involved if they want to try a similar strategy. Although a team of only Baby Pokémon is unconventional, players have successfully completed the Pokémon League with various unique teams in recent weeks—one Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen player even defeated the Elite Four without catching any Pokémon at all.

You can only use Baby Pokémon in the rematch against the Elite Four, after you’ve lost to them once. This is because you need to reach the Day Care Center on Four Island with the Rainbow Pass before you can start breeding Pokémon and getting the eggs needed to hatch them. Good news for collectors: Pokémon Home will soon be supported in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, allowing players to get these Baby Pokémon to complete their National Pokédex.

Nintendo doesn’t often share how well its digital games sell, but Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen seem to be doing very well since they were released on Nintendo Switch. Players are really enjoying them, and it’s fun to see the creative teams they’re building. A core part of what makes Pokémon so popular is the ability to create your own unique adventure and choose a team that’s different from everyone else’s. It takes dedication to complete the game with less common Pokémon, but it’s awesome that players have the freedom to try!
