A player of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen was trying to hatch an Eevee with a specific personality trait (Timid Nature) by repeatedly resetting their game. Instead of getting the desired trait, they were surprised to find they’d hatched a Shiny Eevee – an incredibly rare version of the Pokemon. While it didn’t have the Timid Nature they were hoping for, the player said they were still happy with this exceptionally rare find.
Eevee, first appearing in Pokemon Red and Blue, is one of the most beloved Pokemon. What makes Eevee special is its ability to evolve into eight different forms, depending on how it’s trained – like using special stones or becoming very close to its trainer. While Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen allow players to obtain five of these evolved forms, called “Eeveelutions,” you can only find one Eevee per game, so choosing the right evolution is an important decision.
Pokemon LeafGreen Player Unintentionally Gets a Shiny Eevee After 15 Soft-Resets
A Pokémon trainer was trying to get an Eevee with a specific personality trait (Timid) by repeatedly restarting their game. Instead, they got something much rarer: a Shiny Eevee! The player, known as Studiene on the Pokémon LeafGreen subreddit, achieved this on their 15th attempt. While they originally wanted a Timid nature, they were happy with the Shiny Eevee, even though it had a Sassy nature, joking that they felt lucky enough to buy a lottery ticket. Shiny Pokémon are incredibly rare in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen – with only a 1 in 8,192 chance of appearing – and there’s no way to improve those odds. To find a Shiny Eevee, players need to save their game in front of the Poké Ball containing Eevee in Celadon Mansion (accessed through the back door) and then repeatedly restart the game until a Shiny one appears.

In the original Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, a “soft reset” – restarting the game without turning off the system – was done by pressing the A, B, Start, and Select buttons simultaneously, which would return you to the title screen. The Switch versions of these games made soft-resetting simpler. Now, pressing A, B, X, and Y at the same time achieves the same result, as the X and Y buttons function like Start and Select. While this is convenient, it can be frustrating for players who quickly tap through dialogue boxes. To prevent accidental soft-resets and potential loss of progress, players can also customize the button layout within the Switch’s system settings.
Which Pokemon Natures Work Best for the Eeveelutions?
Starting with the third generation of Pokemon games, each Pokemon has a Nature that affects its stats. A Pokemon’s Nature boosts one stat while lowering another. For instance, an Adamant Nature increases physical Attack but lowers Special Attack. Studiene was hoping for an Eevee with a Timid Nature, which would have made it faster but weaker in physical attacks. Timid Natures are especially useful for Pokemon that are quick and rely on special attacks – Jolteon, one of Eevee’s evolutions, is a good example. While later Pokemon games allow you to change a Pokemon’s Nature using items like Mints, this isn’t possible in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. This means that in those games, a Pokemon’s Nature is determined entirely by chance.
Studiene’s Eevee has a Sassy Nature, meaning it’s naturally strong defensively but a bit slow. Because of this, they chose to evolve it into Vaporeon rather than Jolteon. While Jolteon is usually the best choice in the FireRed and LeafGreen games, Vaporeon is tough and can handle a lot of damage, and its Water and Ice attacks make it a good pick for many battles.
