The classic games Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen are back, and with them comes the popular Fishing Rod mechanic! Ever since the original Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow, players have enjoyed the added challenge and fun of using the Old Rod to catch Water-type Pokemon and more.
Over time, the unique fishing mechanic in early Pokémon games became less emphasized. Now that it’s returned in Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen, many players are looking for all the Fishing Rod locations. If you’re tired of searching endlessly and want to start fishing right away, here’s a guide to help you find every Fishing Rod and become a skilled angler.
Where to Find All Fishing Rods in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen
In Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen, there are three different Fishing Rods. Each rod has a different level, and they let you catch Water-type Pokémon (and other Pokémon that live in the water) for battles.
There are three fishing rods, each with different capabilities. The Old Rod is the least effective, letting you catch Pokémon from levels 1 to 10. The Good Rod is better, allowing you to fish for Pokémon between levels 10 and 25. Finally, the Super Rod is the most powerful and can catch Pokémon starting at level 25 and going all the way up to 50 and beyond.
Some rare Pokémon, such as Dratini, require a better fishing rod – either a Tier 2 or Tier 3 – to catch. The basic Old Rod isn’t strong enough to attract these hard-to-find Dragon-type Pokémon.
Okay, so as a Pokémon fan, I know getting a fishing rod early on is super helpful! You can find your first one in Vermillion City, which is where the third Gym is. Just head to the house that’s to the left of the Pokémon Center and go inside. There’s a fisherman in there who will happily give you an Old Rod – it’s free! It’s a great way to start catching Water-type Pokémon.
As you progress in the game, you can obtain the Good Rod by speaking with the Fisherman in Fuchsia City, the town with the fifth Gym. He lives in a red house located to the right (east) of the Pokémon Center. Look for the house at the end of the path with a small pond in the garden – that’s where you’ll find him.
After you get the Poke Flute and wake up Snorlax, you can find the Super Rod. Start in Lavender Town and head south on Route 12 until you see a small house with a blue roof on an island between two bridges. Inside, you’ll meet the Master Fisherman, who will give you the Super Rod.

Now that you have the best Fishing Rod, it’s time to catch strong Pokémon like Dewgong, Kingler, Gyarados, Dratini, and Dragonair! Keep in mind that Dratini and Dragonair can only be fished up in the deepest part of the Safari Zone. To get there, use Repellent to avoid battles with other Pokémon, then fish in that area until you catch a Dratini.
