Pokémon Games that Prove the Series Can Still Surprise Players

The Pokémon series recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and continues to release popular and successful games, a remarkable achievement shared by very few other video game franchises.

Look, keeping a game series going strong for thirty years is seriously hard, right? But somehow, Nintendo, Game Freak, and The Pokémon Company have actually pulled it off. They’ve managed to keep both longtime fans like me and new players hooked – it’s pretty amazing, honestly.

The core Pokémon games have stayed fairly consistent in how they play and feel, but the Pokémon series as a whole has often delighted fans with creative and fresh spin-off titles.

8. Pokémon Conquest

Pokémon in Feudal Japan

Since 1998, the Pokémon series has regularly tried out new games beyond the main adventures, like the Pokémon Trading Card Game and Hey You, Pikachu! One of the most unexpected of these early spinoffs was Pokémon Conquest, which combined the Pokémon world with the strategy game Nobunaga’s Ambition.

Pokémon Conquest is a strategy role-playing game for the Nintendo DS where you play as a young leader in the Ransei region. Your goal is to take over all 17 kingdoms using Pokémon and ultimately defeat Oda Nobunaga, a famous historical figure from Japan’s Sengoku period.

When Conquest first came out, it totally blew me away! It wasn’t like any other Pokémon game I’d ever played – the way it played, the world it built, and even the story were all so different. It didn’t become a massive bestseller, but it really showed everyone that Pokémon could work brilliantly in a historical setting and with a more in-depth RPG style. It proved they could really branch out!

7. New Pokémon Snap

An Unexpected Comeback

Nintendo has released many different Pokémon games over the years, and while some became popular and got sequels, they mostly stopped revisiting older Pokémon spinoff titles after the late 2010s, with New Pokémon Snap being a notable exception.

After many years, a new installment in the beloved Pokémon Snap series has arrived! New Pokémon Snap takes place in the Lental region and challenges players to photograph Pokémon while studying a fascinating new behavior called the Illumina phenomenon, all under the guidance of Professor Mirror.

Considering the original Pokémon Snap was released 22 years before New Pokémon Snap came out on the Nintendo Switch, the new game was a delightful surprise. Its success suggests that other older Pokémon spin-off titles, such as Conquest and Pokémon Ranger, could make a comeback in the future.

6. Detective Pikachu

Pokémon with a Sherlock Twist

The Nintendo 3DS was a great time for Pokémon, marked by a lot of new ideas. While Pokémon X and Y were the first main series games to use full 3D graphics, Detective Pikachu was perhaps the most unique and innovative Pokémon game on the system.

Detective Pikachu was the first game to branch out into a real adventure story within the Pokémon world. Players take on the role of Tim Goodman, a young man who teams up with a clever, talking Pikachu to solve small mysteries and find Tim’s missing father, Harry Goodman.

While reviews for Detective Pikachu were mixed, it stood out from other Pokémon games with its emphasis on storytelling. This story was then adapted into a live-action Pokémon movie, and continued in the 2023 game, Detective Pikachu Returns.

5. Pokémon GO

A Global Mobile Phenomenon

Pokémon is a hugely popular franchise with many successful video games. However, while those games have sold incredibly well, none have had as big an impact on how people interact in the real world as Pokémon GO developed by Niantic.

As a huge Pokémon fan, I’m obsessed with Pokémon GO! It’s a free mobile game that uses augmented reality, which means you actually walk around in the real world to find and catch Pokémon. You find them near places called PokeStops, and then you can battle other players at Gyms – these are usually at famous landmarks, like Cinderella Castle at Disney World! It’s seriously amazing being able to ‘catch’ Pokémon while you’re out and about.

When Pokémon GO launched in 2016, it quickly became incredibly popular worldwide, attracting both longtime Pokémon fans and new players. The game encouraged exploration and discovery as players searched for rare Pokémon, and its simple catching system later influenced the development of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Eevee!

4. Pokkén Tournament

Pokémon’s First Proper Fighting Game

As a huge Pokémon fan, I always thought it was only a matter of time before we got a proper fighting game! Pokémon battles are such a core part of the series, and finally, The Pokémon Company delivered with Pokkén Tournament. It felt like a natural evolution for the franchise, and I was so excited when it came out!

Pokkén Tournament, created by Bandai Namco, combines the strategic battling of Pokémon with the action-packed fighting style of Tekken. The game doesn’t have a strong story focus; instead, it centers on player-versus-player and player-versus-computer battles featuring 23 different Pokémon, including Blaziken, Croagunk, and Decidueye.

Although Tournament isn’t as complicated as some other fighting games, it showed that Pokémon battles could be more exciting and competitive. Newer games like Pokémon Legends: Z-A are starting to adopt similar battle systems, moving closer to the fast-paced style of Tournament.

3. Pokémon Unite

Diving into the World of MOBAs

Starting in 2015, the world of Pokémon has become increasingly popular on mobile devices. The franchise has tried out different game styles for mobile, and one of the most successful and original titles is Pokémon Unite.

Pokémon Unite is a free-to-play online game where players battle in teams of three, four, or five. Each player controls a unique Pokémon and scores points by defeating opponents and capturing wild Pokémon.

It was surprising when Pokémon was turned into a MOBA-style game, but TiMi Studio Group successfully did it, offering a new and unique way for both casual and competitive players to experience Pokémon.

2. Pokémon Legends: Arceus

A Breath of Fresh Air

When the main Pokémon games were initially revealed for home consoles on the Nintendo Switch, fans were thrilled about the possibilities. However, many were ultimately let down by how limited and repetitive the games actually were.

Fans were completely surprised when Game Freak released Pokémon Legends: Arceus after Pokémon Sword and Shield. This new game is a prequel set hundreds of years in the past, in a time before Pokémon trainers were common and Poké Balls were still being developed in what is now the Sinnoh region, then known as Hisui.

Arceus can be seen as the first truly open-world Pokémon game. It let players roam freely through the Hisui region, finding and quietly catching Pokémon while also trying not to get attacked and learning about the strange, powerful spacetime rifts appearing around the land.

1. Pokémon Pokopia

The Highest Rated Pokémon Game of All Time

As the 30th anniversary of Pokémon approaches, fans were anticipating new games in 2026. However, no one really expected Pokémon Pokopia – a game focused on crafting and social interaction – and certainly not that it would become the best-rated Pokémon game ever.

Pokopia takes place years after devastating natural disasters have driven humanity to space. Players control a Ditto who can transform to look like their original trainer, embarking on a mission to assist Professor Tangrowth in restoring the land, helping Pokémon in need, and reconstructing vital buildings like Pokémon Centers.

Pokémon Pokopia beautifully blends the building and crafting of Minecraft with the friendly social interactions of Animal Crossing, all wrapped in the captivating world of Pokémon. It’s a fantastic game that really highlights how much potential there is for exciting Pokémon adventures.
