As a seasoned gamer with over a decade of Pokemon adventures under my belt, I have to say that the anticipation for new updates and announcements at the Pokemon World Championships is always palpable. The 2024 event has me particularly excited due to the potential inclusion of Dynamax and Gigantamax features in Pokemon GO – a feature that fans of Generation 8 have been eagerly waiting for, five long years!
Over the past few years, the Pokemon World Championships have often featured significant announcements, such as sneak peeks at upcoming games, downloadable content, and updates for key titles like Pokemon Unite. These announcements typically focus on the competitive aspect of the franchise, including unveiling items like Room Service that alter strategies used in previous games. Given that Pokemon GO has been consistently updated since its launch in 2016, it’s crucial to incorporate this popular mobile game into the mix.
As a dedicated fan of Pokémon GO, it’s no surprise that the developers at Niantic opted for a gradual approach when introducing new elements to the game. With so many creatures, tactics, and features to accommodate in a world that seamlessly blends reality with the imaginative realm of pocket monsters, tackling all six generations simultaneously would have been an overwhelming undertaking, especially at the game’s initial launch. By focusing on the original 150 Pokémon to begin with, Niantic ensured they had a solid foundation from which to build and expand the game over time. This strategy also allowed them to introduce new Pokémon, events, and novel features incrementally, ensuring that the game remained fresh and engaging for players. However, it’s clear that not all elements received equal attention, with some receiving more favorable treatment than others.
Generation 8 Fans Have Waited Five Long Years for Dynamax, Gigantamax, and More in Pokemon GO
The Galar Region Has Been Skipped Over For the Last Five Years of Updates
In Pokemon GO, it’s quite unusual to see Generation 8 Pokemon because the game usually introduces newer creatures to mark new releases, but Galar region has been underrepresented so far. Most of the Generation 8 Pokemon in Pokemon GO are regional forms, some of which were added back in 2019 as a promotion for Pokemon Sword and Shield when they first came out. This led many players to anticipate events centered around Galar, its Pokedex, and Dynamax features, but unfortunately, these elements and their associated creatures have been overshadowed by other regions in the game’s focus.
In Pokemon GO, Mega Evolution is the only feature used during battles, but it’s clear why fans might feel let down by the absence of Dynamax, especially after regional forms of Kanto creatures were introduced for promotional reasons without any further additions. Even the evolutionary lines of Scorbunny, Grookey, and Sobble haven’t made an appearance in the game yet, which is surprising since all other starter lineups, including those from Paldea, can be found easily in the wild. The introduction of regional forms was supposed to pave the way for Paldea’s Pokemon to join the game during Generation 9, but fans of Galar have been waiting so long that this year, Pokemon Sword and Shield are celebrating their fifth anniversary.
Why Pokemon Sword and Shield Fans Should Keep Their Eyes on the Pokemon World Championships 2024
Fans of Dynamax, Gigantamax, and Galar in general have something exciting to look forward to! Hints about the feature have been subtly revealed through Pokemon GO’s 8th anniversary artwork, and recent game updates have uncovered in-progress assets related to it. It appears that this feature could be integrated into the game soon, but remember that similar assets discovered in the past have sometimes taken years to fully materialize. If the feature is indeed coming soon, it might be officially announced during the Pokemon World Championships, so keep a close watch around the time of the closing ceremonies!
Niantic could maximize the potential of celebrating the fifth anniversary of Pokemon Sword and Shield by dedicating more focus on the region of Galar in upcoming seasons. Given that Galar has often taken a back seat in previous games, this would be an excellent opportunity for Niantic to shine a spotlight on this area and provide fans with long-awaited content related to it. It’s hoped that, even if details about Dynamax, Gigantamax, and other Galar Pokemon aren’t revealed at the championships, Niantic won’t delay unveiling them for too much longer.
