Pokémon GO is adding new challenges called Super Mega Raids, letting players battle and catch even stronger Mega Evolved Pokémon. These raids will also introduce a new, higher power level called Super Max. Players can start participating in Super Mega Raids when the Pokémon GO Tour: Kalos event begins globally on February 28th and runs through March 1st.
Mega Evolution in Pokemon GO lets certain Pokemon temporarily become much stronger, just like in other Pokemon games. While battling Mega Evolved Pokemon in raids has been possible for a while, the game’s developer, Scopely, recently announced a new kind of raid that will offer even greater power than players have experienced before.
Pokemon GO Reveals Super Max Level and Super Mega Raids
As a huge Pokémon GO fan, I’m so excited about the new updates! They’re letting us boost our Mega Evolved Pokémon even further, to a state they’re calling ‘Super Max’! It’s beyond the current Mega Evolution levels, and it sounds amazing. Apparently, Super Max Pokémon will have way higher CP, and we’ll get more Candy, XP, and even XL Candy when we catch Pokémon of the same type. Plus, the cooldown for Mega Evolving them again will be cut down to just 24 hours! To get your Pokémon to this new level, it needs to already be at the third Mega Evolution tier, and you’ll have to use Mega Energy specific to that Pokémon. It’s going to take some work, but a super-powered Pokémon sounds totally worth it!

This event introduces new, challenging Super Mega Raids featuring Pokémon like Mega Victreebel and Mega Malamar. Once captured, these Pokémon can be powered up to Super Max Level. Scopely suggests teams of at least eight players tackle these raids, with everyone bringing at least one Mega Evolved Pokémon. During the raids, opposing Pokémon will become enraged, gaining damage-reducing shields. Each player can only break one shield per raid, but a Mega Evolved Pokémon will automatically be brought into battle (if one isn’t already active) and receive a powerful attack boost to help break it. Throughout the event, players will also have the chance to encounter and evolve Mega Beedrill, receiving enough Mega Energy to do so.
Super Mega Raids will appear at Gyms and Power Spots. To help players find them, Scopely is releasing a new online map. This map will let you filter events by type and date in Pokémon GO, and it will be easy to share locations with friends so you can play together.
Pokemon GO’s Super Mega Raids Will Use a New Currency
Image via The Pokemon Company The official announcement confirms a new in-game currency for Pokémon GO called Link Charges. These charges will be used to participate in Super Mega Raids, but not regular Mega Raids. Players can earn Link Charges by opening Gifts, completing weekly challenges, attending official Pokémon GO Campfire meetups, or buying them in the in-game shop or on the Pokémon GO website. There will be a limit to how many Link Charges players can hold, but they’ll be stored in a separate Link Holder, which players will automatically receive when they first earn Link Charges – they won’t take up space in your regular inventory.
The report confirms a recent leak that has frustrated some Pokemon GO players, who worry it will make the game more difficult for those playing remotely. The official details show that players attending Super Mega Raids in person can pay to enter with either a Premium Battle Pass or a certain number of Link Charges. Remote players, however, will need to use both a Remote Raid Pass and Link Charges. While the leak suggested 200 Link Charges for all players, Scopely hasn’t confirmed this amount, or how many Link Charges players can hold at once. Players will be able to earn more Link Charges during the Pokemon GO Tour: Kalos event, and the storage limit will be temporarily increased. However, both the boosted earnings and increased storage will return to normal after the event ends.
