According to reports, the game development company behind Pokemon Go, Niantic, has announced a $3.5 billion acquisition of its gaming division by Monopoly Go’s creator, Scopely. In simpler terms, Scopely has bought the games branch of Niantic for 3.5 billion dollars.
Indeed, as per our previous report, it’s true that Scopely has purchased Niantic’s gaming division. This acquisition encompasses popular games such as Pokemon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now. Additionally, the deal includes Niantic’s companion apps and services like Niantic Campfire and Wayfarer. After the $3.5 billion transaction, these assets will be managed under Scopely. Excitingly, the entire Niantic game development team, including key figures Kei Kawai and Ed Wu, will remain with the company to continue crafting and managing their cherished gaming experiences.
Ed Wu, the head of Pokemon GO, has announced the acquisition and is optimistic that it will prove beneficial for both the community and the game’s future development. Ed Wu also reassured players that the entire Pokemon GO team will remain intact during this partnership, and with Scopely’s dedication, expertise, and resources, they aim to make Pokemon GO even better than before.
Scopely’s post also shares data about Niantic’s gaming business, such as figures for Pokemon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now. Notably, Pokemon GO boasts over 20 million weekly active players since its debut and remains in the top 10 games. Together, these trainers have covered more than 30 billion miles collectively.
Pikmin Bloom users racked up a staggering 3.94 trillion steps in the year 2024, achieving their peak active player count just last year. On the other hand, Monster Hunter: Rise debuted with more than 15 million downloads within its first seven months, and an impressive 50% of its player base played daily throughout the entire week.
