Pokemon Go Could Have A New Home In The Coming Weeks

Reports indicate that Niantic is engaged in negotiations with Scopely Inc., a video game division owned by Saudi Arabia, regarding a potential acquisition worth around $3.5 billion.

There’s no definitive decision made as of now, but there are rumors suggesting that an announcement about a potential deal might occur within the next few weeks. This hypothetical agreement is likely to incorporate Pokemon Go and other mobile gaming platforms.

Both Niantic and Scopely declined to comment on the alleged talks when asked about it.

Niantic claims that Pokemon Go, launched in 2016, is unrivaled among augmented reality apps for its success. However, the company’s other gaming initiatives haven’t enjoyed the same level of prosperity. For instance, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, introduced in 2017, missed its mark and was closed on January 31, 2022. Another unsuccessful venture was NBA All-World, an augmented reality game based on basketball, which debuted in January 2023 but didn’t make it past a year before shutting down in June of the same year, resulting in the dismissal of 230 employees.

Niantic creates more than just games; they also design a tool that captures and disseminates 3D scans of actual locations in the world, which can be utilized beyond gaming purposes.

Two years back, a company renowned for creating mobile games, Scopely, was bought out for an impressive $4.9 billion by Savvy Games Group, based in Saudi Arabia. Then, in August 2024, Niantic entered into an agreement with Savvy Games to bolster its presence in the regions of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Egypt.
