Question: Can you tell me about the overall experience with the release of the Gigantamax function? What were its strengths and weaknesses?
In developing the Gigantamax feature, we aimed to introduce a fresh endgame challenge for players to conquer. Our intention was to set Gigantamax confrontations apart from Raids, and emphasize strategic thinking, teamwork, and dedication towards your Pokemon. We were aware that Gigantamax battles would be tough for players, but the satisfaction of overcoming these epic conflicts made it even more worthwhile.
In terms of technical aspects, this feature release in Pokemon GO was exceptionally seamless compared to previous ones. We successfully managed to accommodate and run 40-person lobbies globally without any significant issues. Furthermore, we introduced a fresh gaming experience that players eagerly engaged with. Our statistics indicate that the debut weekend of Gigantamax battles generated some of our highest instances of simultaneous play, with various regions witnessing an impressive surge in collaborative gameplay.
Reflecting on the situation, it would have been beneficial to offer a more comprehensive guide for trainers on the complexity of these challenges they were about to encounter. We received feedback that many trainers felt underprepared due to this experience being significantly distinct from their past Raid Battle experiences. However, our trainers are known for their intelligence and adaptability. We observed a substantial improvement in success rates from Saturday to Sunday, as trainers began devising new strategies to conquer Gigantamax Pokemon.

One modification we’ve implemented is enhancing the rewards for defeating Gigantamax Pokemon, not just their catch rate. Our goal is to make the experience of overcoming these challenges gratifying for players and to ensure that Gigantamax battles offer a suitable challenge in terms of resources needed to power up your Pokemon to defeat them. At present, Gigantamax Battles are the primary source for Stardust and XL Rare Candy in the game. Furthermore, we have future plans for Gigantamax, which we’ll be able to reveal more about at a later time.
Gigantamax Battles Are Pokemon GO’s Greatest Challenge
Players of Pokemon GO are accustomed to tackling demanding content, having engaged in raid battles against Legendary Pokemon spanning the entire franchise, clashes with Giovanni and Team GO Rocket members, among other tough encounters.
