Pokemon GO Interview: Senior Director Talks The Future Of Gigantamax

As someone who has been immersed in the world of Pokémon for what feels like a lifetime, I can confidently say that the introduction of Gigantamax battles in Pokémon GO is an exciting development. It’s clear from this interview with Steranka that the team at Niantic has put a lot of thought into creating challenging content that encourages players to collaborate and strategize like never before.

In October 2024, the eagerly anticipated Gigantamax feature was unveiled in Pokémon GO, following the initial release of Dynamax earlier in the year. In these Gigantamax battles within Pokémon GO, teams of up to 40 trainers collaborate to overcome a gigantic-sized Pokemon, with the ultimate goal of capturing it and incorporating it into their squad. To date, Gigantamax versions of Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise, and Gengar have made their debut in Pokémon GO, with more anticipated for the coming future.

In this article, Game Rant had a chat with Michael Steranka, the live game senior director of Pokemon GO, regarding the introduction of the Gigantamax feature, lessons learned from the initial event, and upcoming alterations. Steranka shared insights on how Gigantamax battles were devised as advanced challenges for seasoned trainers, offered tips to aspiring Gigantamax battlers, and hinted at potential future developments. (For easier understanding, this transcript has been shortened and simplified.)

This conversation happened prior to the global event in the Wild Area, an event that occurred on the 23rd and 24th of November.

Changes Will Be Made To Future Gigantamax Battles

Question: Can you tell me about the overall experience with the release of the Gigantamax function? What were its strengths and weaknesses?

In developing the Gigantamax feature, we aimed to introduce a fresh endgame challenge for players to conquer. Our intention was to set Gigantamax confrontations apart from Raids, and emphasize strategic thinking, teamwork, and dedication towards your Pokemon. We were aware that Gigantamax battles would be tough for players, but the satisfaction of overcoming these epic conflicts made it even more worthwhile.

In terms of technical aspects, this feature release in Pokemon GO was exceptionally seamless compared to previous ones. We successfully managed to accommodate and run 40-person lobbies globally without any significant issues. Furthermore, we introduced a fresh gaming experience that players eagerly engaged with. Our statistics indicate that the debut weekend of Gigantamax battles generated some of our highest instances of simultaneous play, with various regions witnessing an impressive surge in collaborative gameplay.

Reflecting on the situation, it would have been beneficial to offer a more comprehensive guide for trainers on the complexity of these challenges they were about to encounter. We received feedback that many trainers felt underprepared due to this experience being significantly distinct from their past Raid Battle experiences. However, our trainers are known for their intelligence and adaptability. We observed a substantial improvement in success rates from Saturday to Sunday, as trainers began devising new strategies to conquer Gigantamax Pokemon.

As a fellow gamer, I’d be happy to share some insights! The upcoming Gigantamax events and battles are set to undergo some exciting transformations. Keep an eye out for the specifics, as we’ll see new strategies, tweaked rules, and perhaps even a few surprises that will make these battles more engaging than ever.

One modification we’ve implemented is enhancing the rewards for defeating Gigantamax Pokemon, not just their catch rate. Our goal is to make the experience of overcoming these challenges gratifying for players and to ensure that Gigantamax battles offer a suitable challenge in terms of resources needed to power up your Pokemon to defeat them. At present, Gigantamax Battles are the primary source for Stardust and XL Rare Candy in the game. Furthermore, we have future plans for Gigantamax, which we’ll be able to reveal more about at a later time.

Gigantamax Battles Are Pokemon GO’s Greatest Challenge

Players of Pokemon GO are accustomed to tackling demanding content, having engaged in raid battles against Legendary Pokemon spanning the entire franchise, clashes with Giovanni and Team GO Rocket members, among other tough encounters. However, Gigantamax battles have been crafted to offer a new degree of difficulty, surpassing even that of Tier 3 Dynamax battles, which were previously considered the most challenging content in the game. Steranka labels Gigantamax battles as “endgame” challenges and offers tips for players aiming to conquer these formidable opponents.

How might I provide guidance to Pokémon GO players aiming to excel in Gigantamax battles, particularly those who missed out on the initial starter/Gengar raids and are new to G-Max encounters?

Steranka’s Advice: There are numerous excellent guides available today, so I recommend trainers to explore videos and articles from sites like Game Rant or their preferred content creator. Here are some quick suggestions:

A: In the current version of Pokemon GO, it’s not possible to transform a Dynamax Pokemon into a Gigantamax one. Will this stay the same, or could there be changes in the future?

In the present, there are no intentions to alter this situation. The Gigantamax Pokemon serve as extraordinary rewards for conquering one of the toughest challenges in Pokemon GO. To include these Pokemon in your Pokedex, you’ll need to demonstrate your skills and determination!

Is it possible that additional Pokémon will be added to the Dynamax pool in the future, with a particular emphasis on higher-tier Dynamax raids?

Certainly! Right now, there’s a significant difference in skill level between Tier 3 Dynamax battles and Gigantamax battles. In the upcoming period, we plan to add additional tiers of Dynamax to help bridge that gap.

Is there anyone on the team who has a preferred Gigantamax Pokemon, or are there any new additions coming to Pokemon GO that you’re especially looking forward to?

Steranka mentions that his all-time favorite Pokemon is Machamp and he plans to get ready for the moment when Gigantamax Machamp appears.

A: Do you have any additional information that you would like our Game Rant readers to be aware of regarding Dynamax, Gigantamax, future Pokemon GO events, new Pokemon, or anything else in general?

As a fan, I’m thrilled to share that our team has revolutionized the way we play together! It’s heartening to see so many trainers embracing this innovative feature. With time, Dynamax and Gigantamax encounters are expected to get smoother and more effortless as trainers refine their strategies and work together seamlessly. Here’s to an exciting journey ahead!
