Pokemon GO is Running Out of New Pokemon

Pokémon GO is facing a challenge as the number of undiscovered Pokémon available to add to the game has fallen to a new low—below ten. With nearly 900 Pokémon already available to players as the game approaches its 10th anniversary, the developers, Scopely, are finding it increasingly difficult to introduce new creatures into the popular mobile augmented reality game.

When Pokemon GO launched in July 2016, players could only catch Pokemon from the very first generation, and even then, not all of them were available at first. Rare Pokemon like Ditto, Mew, Mewtwo, and the legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres were added later. Over the past nine years, updates have gradually introduced Pokemon from every generation, and now several generations are fully represented within the game.

Despite regular updates keeping Pokémon GO interesting, the game is starting to run out of Pokémon to add. A player on Reddit noticed that after the recent addition of the Impidimp line during an event, only 99 Pokémon remain to be released. With Impidimp, Morgrem, and Grimmsnarl now in the game, a total of 926 Pokémon are available, out of all 1,025 that exist. This could present a challenge for the game’s developer, Scopely, as Pokémon GO nears completion compared to the core Pokémon series.

Currently, most Pokémon from generations 1 through 3 and 5 through 6 are already available in the game. Only three Pokémon from generation 4 – Arceus, Manaphy, and Phione – remain to be added. The number of unreleased Pokémon from generation 7 is also very low. However, over half of the Pokémon still missing from Pokémon GO come from generation 9’s Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, including its downloadable content, with 59 Pokémon yet to be released.

Even though there aren’t many new Pokémon left to discover, many fans aren’t worried. They believe the upcoming main series games, likely called Pokémon Wind and Wave (as revealed in the October “Teraleak”), will introduce a lot more Pokémon that can eventually be added to Pokémon GO. Plus, Pokémon GO could also add different forms of existing Pokémon, like Dynamax and Mega Evolutions, which haven’t been included yet, giving the developers plenty of content for future updates.
