The newest update to *Pokémon GO* has raised the player level cap to 80, but it’s also causing a problem: players are running out of space for items. Niantic and Scopely, the developers of *Pokémon GO*, have long benefited from players buying extra storage, but the large number of free items included in this update has caught many players off guard.
Just recently, Scopely announced that Pokemon GO is raising its level cap from 50 to 80 with the latest update. Fans were excited about this change, as the last level cap increase—from 40 to 50—happened way back in 2020. Players who are already level 25 or higher will instantly gain at least one level with the update, and there will be free cosmetic rewards for those who’ve reached specific levels.
Pokemon GO Just Flooded Players With Too Many Items
After the recent update that adjusted the level cap, many *Pokemon GO* players found themselves overwhelmed with a huge influx of free items. Players on platforms like Reddit and Twitter quickly reported that they leveled up faster than expected and received so many items that their storage filled up, preventing them from interacting with PokeStops. While Niantic increased the maximum storage capacity in June, players still need to purchase additional space in the in-game shop.
Some players are frustrated by the recent surge in rewards, but many are finding it funny. A popular new meme, “You get a berry!”, is spreading as players jokingly give tons of berries to Pokémon, reminding people of when Oprah Winfrey famously gave away nearly 300 cars to her audience back in 2004.
Players aren’t just upset about getting too many free items with the recent update. Before the level cap was raised, players needed to complete special research tasks when they reached level 40 to continue leveling up – just earning experience points wasn’t enough. These research tasks were removed for levels 40 through 49, but they’ve now been brought back for players trying to reach level 71. Some players who already completed these challenging tasks are frustrated and don’t want to repeat them to reach the new level cap.
