Pokemon GO: Mega Aerodactyl Raid Guide | Best Counters, Weaknesses & More

In the exciting world of Pokemon GO, Mega Aerodactyl takes center stage as a Raid Boss from July 28 (10:00am local time) to August 4, 2025. Just like any other Mega Raid battle, Mega Aerodactyl is ready for a challenge. If you triumph in the fight, an encounter with Aerodactyl awaits you. And if fortune favors you, the Aerodactyl you meet could be Shiny!

As a hardcore Pokemon GO gamer, I’ve got some exciting news! The mighty Rock/Flying-type Mega Aerodactyl boasts a whopping Max CP of 4655 – but that number skyrockets during the Mega Raid battle! Now

Pokemon GO: Mega Aerodactyl Raid Weaknesses and Resistances

Mega Aerodactyl Type Effectiveness

1. It is weak against Water and Electric attacks.
2. Use moves that exploit its other type weaknesses when possible.

Weaknesses: Water, Electric, Rock, Ice, Steel
Resistances: Fire, Bug, Normal, Poison, Flying

In the traditional version of Pokemon, Flying-types and those with Levitate are completely protected from Ground-type moves. However, due to the unique battle mechanics in Pokemon GO, Aerodactyl, a Rock/Flying-type, can actually be hit by Ground-type attacks. These moves deal regular damage to Aerodactyl in Pokemon GO, which is unusual because of its Flying characteristic.

Which Pokemon and Moves Should You Use?

In simpler terms, it’s most effective to face off against Mega Aerodactyl using a Pokémon that has undergone Mega Evolution, a Legendary creature, or an Ultra Beast. Luckily, since the introduction of more Pokémon, you now have a greater variety of options to counter Mega Aerodactyl compared to the year 2024.

The following Pokemon and their Fast/Charged Attacks are good counters to Mega Aerodactyl:

Type Fast Attack Charged Attack
Zacian (Crowned Sword) Fairy/Steel Metal Claw Behemoth Blade
Zamazenta (Crowned Shield) Fighting/Steel Metal Claw Behemoth Bash
Dusk Mane Necrozma Psychic/Steel Metal Claw Sunsteel Strike
Primal Kyogre Water Waterfall * Origin Pulse
White Kyurem Dragon/Ice Steel Wing Ice Burn
Black Kyurem Dragon/Ice Dragon Tail Freeze Shock
Mega Swampert Water/Ground Water Gun * Hydro Cannon
Mega Blastoise Water Water Gun * Hydro Cannon
Mega Tyranitar Rock/Dark * Smack Down Stone Edge
Mega Manectric Electric Thunder Fang Wild Charge
Thundurus (Therian Forme) Electric/Flying Volt Switch * Wildbolt Storm
Dialga (Origin Forme) Steel/Dragon Metal Claw * Roar of Time
Xurkitree Electric Thunder Shock Discharge
Quaquaval Water Water Gun * Hydro Cannon
Shadow Metagross Steel/Psychic Bullet Punch * Meteor Mash
Shadow Dialga Steel/Dragon Metal Claw Iron Head
Shadow Rhyperior Ground/Rock Smack Down * Rock Wrecker
Shadow Empoleon Water/Steel Metal Claw * Hydro Cannon

To master this Charged Attack, you’ll need either the Elite Fast Move or Elite Charge Move. However, there are a few exceptions: Quaquaval and Mega Tyranitar learned their Charged and Fast Attacks during their Community Day events.

In most instances, the best Charged Attacks for Mega Aerodactyl are exclusively obtainable through Elite Technical Machines. You can secure these by participating in GO Battle Leagues. If you don’t have access to them, you might need to settle for the alternative Charged Attack of the corresponding Pokemon instead.

When Zacian/Zamazenta undergo a transformation using Crowned Sword/Shield Energy, the Iron Head (Charged Attack) morphs into either Behemoth Sword or Behemoth Bash.

To ensure success in battle, try not to bring Pokemon that are particularly vulnerable to Rock and Flying-style attacks. Mega Aerodactyl’s Quick Attack and Special Attack are likely to be of the Rock type. In certain scenarios, it might have a Fast Attack known as Bite, which is Dark-type, making it effective against most Ghost and Psychic Pokemon. Alternatively, it could have Steel Wing, a Steel-type attack, providing it with resistance against most Fairy, Ice, and Rock opponents.

In Pokemon Raids, Shadow Pokemon are often chosen due to their unique bonus. This means it might be wise to delay purifying them. Additionally, these Shadow Pokemon need to learn a fresh Charged Attack, which requires Stardust and Candy. Notably, they can’t unlearn Frustration, so if the new Charged Attack isn’t desired, you may require a Charged Technical Machine (TM) for the change.

If you successfully conquer Mega Aerodactyl, you’ll get an opportunity to capture it. However, during this encounter, Aerodactyl won’t be in its Mega Evolved state. Defeating it in a Mega Raid will grant you some Mega Energy – initially 200 units, and later on, 40 energy for each subsequent defeat.
