Key Takeaways
- Some Pokemon in Pokemon GO require astronomical amounts of Candy to evolve, such as Magikarp to Gyarados needing 400.
- Certain evolutions like Gurdurr to Conkeldurr require 200 Candy, with a worthwhile payoff for strong Fighting type Pokemon.
- Candy in Pokemon GO can be acquired through catching, hatching, transferring, evolving, using Rare Candy, walking Buddy Pokemon, feeding berries, trading, with higher levels earning Candy XL.
As a seasoned Pokémon GO trainer with years of experience under my belt, let me tell you that the quest for Candy is a crucial aspect of this captivating game. Now, I’ve caught ’em all from the humblest Pidgey to the mighty Mewtwo, and trust me, I know how essential Candy is!
The widely acclaimed augmented reality mobile game known as “Pokemon Go,” initially launched in 2016, continues to be a top choice among gamers. This engaging title was jointly produced by Niantic, Nintendo, and The Pokemon Company. Currently, players can collect more than 600 different Pokemon, with numerous species requiring evolution to unlock their full potential.
In the game Pokemon GO, trainers require Candy to develop certain types of Pokemon. This resource, exclusive to each Pokemon’s family, not only facilitates evolution but also enhances the power of the Pokemon. Trainers can accumulate Candy by capturing, hatching eggs, exchanging, evolving, employing Rare Candy, walking with a Buddy Pokemon, feeding berries to Pokemon, and trading. Some Pokemon may only need a small amount of Candy for evolution, while others may require an enormous quantity.
20 Seadra To Kingdra
100 Candies
- Type: Water/Dragon
- Best Fast Attack: Waterfall
- Best Charged Attack: Hydro Pump
Seadra is a type of Pokemon that specializes in water, and it transforms into Kingdra, a Water and Dragon-type Pokemon, by consuming approximately 100 Candy. Interestingly enough, Seadra also has a bit of a greedy streak, as it needs a Dragon Scale to complete its evolution process.
Kingdra swiftly employs maneuvers such as Dragon Rush, Waterfall Torrent, Water Cannon Spray, and Ice Storm Burst (for Blizzard). Additionally, its charged attacks include the use of Outrage, a powerful Dragon roar, and Octazooka, another water-based attack.
At level 50, it boasts a Max CP of 2,986, an Attack and Defense of 194 each, and a Stamina of 181. Kingdra performs reasonably well in the Great League and excels even more in the Ultra League. While other Water-type and Dragon-type Pokemon may be superior, its dual typing proves quite beneficial. In the Master League, however, it’s not worth considering as it would meet a disastrous end.
19 Magneton To Magnezone
100 Candies
- Type: Electric/Steel
- Best Fast Attack: Volt Switch
- Best Charged Attack: Zap Cannon
To evolve Magneton into Magnezone, you need to accumulate 125 Candy (since Magneton itself requires 25 Candy for evolution and then another 100). Additionally, the Magneton must be evolved near a PokeStop that has a Magnetic Lure Module active.
Magnezone’s swift attacks are Charge Beam, an electric-type move, and Spark, another electric attack. Its powerful moves include Flash Cannon (a steel-type move), Mirror Shot (also steel-type), Wild Charge (electric) and Zap Cannon (electric).
At level 50, Magnezone boasts a maximum combat power (CP) of 3,623, with an attack stat of 238, defense stat of 205, and stamina stat of 172. It performs reasonably well in the Great League and excels further in the Master League. However, it doesn’t fare as well in the Ultra League.
18 Snorunt To Froslass
100 Candies
- Type: Ice/Ghost
- Best Fast Attack: Hex
- Best Charged Attack: Shadow Ball
Snorunt transforms into either Glalie (an Ice-type Pokemon) if it’s male, or Froslass (an Ice and Ghost-type) if it’s female. For this transformation to occur, Snorunt needs to consume 100 Candy, but only females can evolve into Froslass after that; males will become Glalie. Additionally, a Sinnoh Stone is also necessary for the evolution process.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, Froslass packs quite the punch with her Quick Moves! She can whip up some Powder Snow (essentially Ice) or unleash a Hex (that’s Ghost for you). But when she gets charged up, watch out! She can let loose with Shadow Ball (Ghost again), Avalanche (Ice this time), and even Crunch (Dark is the key here).
Reaching level 50, Froslass boasts a maximum combat power (CP) of 2,306, an attack stat of 238, a defense stat of 205, and a stamina stat of 172. In the Great League, it fights effectively!
17 Kirlia To Gallade
100 Candies
- Type: Psychic/Fighting
- Best Fast Attack: Charm/Confusion
- Best Charged Attack: Close Combat
Kirlia is a Psychic-type Pokemon that evolves into Gallade (Psychic and Fighting-type) after munching on a whopping 100 Candy. (Kirlia itself evolves from Ralts after consuming 25 Candy too, so it is really 125 Candy!) However, Kirlia needs to be male, because if it is female then it will evolve into Gardevoir. Also, Kirlia needs a Sinnoh Stone on top of everything else.
Gallade’s Quick Attacks are a Fighting-type move called Low Kick, a Psychic-type move named Confusion, and a Fairy-type move referred to as Charm. For its Charge moves, it can use Psychic (Psychic), Grass-type Leaf Blade, Fighting-type Close Combat, and another Psychic move called Synchronoise. When in Shadow form, Gallade’s attacks change to the Normal-type Frustration, and when Purified, it uses Return, also of the Normal type.
At level 50, Gallade boasts a Max CP of 3497, offering an Attack stat of 237, Defense of 195, and Stamina of 169. Generally speaking, it holds its own in competitive play. Specifically, in the Master League, Gallade performs fairly well, while in the Ultra League, it’s quite decent. In comparison, it excels beyond average standards in the Great League.
16 Feebas To Milotic
100 Candies
- Type: Water
- Best Fast Attack: Waterfall
- Best Charged Attack: Hyper Beam
In simpler terms, Feebas is a Water-type Pokemon that transforms into Milotic after it consumes exactly 100 Candy. However, to make the transition from an unattractive fish to a stunning serpent, your trainer must accompany Feebas on a journey of at least 20 kilometers!
As a gamer, I can tell you that Milotic’s quick attacks include the fierce Dragon Tail, the powerful Waterfall, and the precise Water Gun. When it comes to charge moves, this majestic Pokémon can unleash the destructive Hyper Beam, the icy Blizzard, and the sweeping Surf.
At level 50, Milotic boasts a Maximum Combat Power of 3,398, with an Attack of 192, Defense of 219, and Stamina of 216. Regrettably, it underperforms in all competition categories, including Great League, Ultra League, and Master League. While Milotic can endure for a while in the Ultra League and Master League, there are simply superior alternatives when it comes to Water-type Pokémon.
15 Pumpkaboo To Gourgeist
200 Candies
- Type: Grass/Ghost
- Best Fast Attack: Razor Leaf
- Best Charged Attack: Fire Blast/Poltergeist
In October of 2021, a Pokemon themed around Halloween was launched, and this particular Pokémon, known as Gourgeist, is special because it comes in four distinct sizes: Small, Average, Large, and Super. This makes it an exciting addition for gamers to collect, each version boasting a shimmering appearance.
As a devoted trainer, I’m always thrilled when I can call upon my trusty Gourgeist in battle. This spectral Pokémon packs quite the punch with its quick moves – Hex, a chilling ghost-type attack, and Razor Leaf, a swift grass-type slash.
At level 50, this Pokemon isn’t particularly impressive with a Max CP of 2,633, boasting a 171 Attack, 219 Defense, and 146 Stamina at full potential. Regrettably, it struggles in both the Ultra League and the Master League, and there are superior options for Pokemon of its kind available.
14 Phantump To Trevenant
200 Candies
- Type: Ghost/Grass
- Best Fast Attack: Shadow Claw
- Best Charged Attack: Shadow Ball
Another Pokemon which will take 200 Candies to evolve is Phantump to Trevenant, but this can be avoided if gamers have someone to trade with. Leaving all the Candies gained from catching Phantump to leveling up to get the best Trevenant possible. There is nothing extra needed for this tree, so this is a fairly straightforward evolution, albeit the amount of Candies.
When it comes to its attacks, there’s limited flexibility, but it packs quite a punch. Its Quick Moves are Shadow Claw (Ghost) and Sucker Punch (Dark). For its Charged Attacks, it uses Foul Play (Dark), Seed Bomb (Grass), and Shadow Ball. While the variety isn’t vast, it has some potent moves that will come in handy for Gym Battles, encounters with Team Rocket Grunts, or PVP Battles.
This Ghost/Grass-type haunting tree reaches a maximum CP of 2893 when it’s level 50. In combat, it can dish out impressive Attack stats of up to 201, and boast Defense and Stamina values of 154 and 198 respectively. It thrives in the Great League but faces challenges in the Ultra League or Master League.
13 Shelmet To Accelgor
200 Candies
- Type: Bug
- Best Fast Attack: Infestation/Water Shuriken
- Best Charged Attack: Focus Blast
Players must collect 200 Candy to transform Shelmet into Accelgor, but an alternative option exists that doesn’t require any candies if you can make a trade with another player in the game. However, finding someone to trade with might be challenging without a friend who also plays.
In simpler terms, Accelgor is a Pokémon of the Bug type. Its Quick Moves include Acid Spray (which can also be considered Poisonous) and Infestation (typically associated with Bugs). For its Quick Attacks, it uses Bug Buzz and Signal Beam, both being Bug-type attacks. Additionally, Accelgor has Focus Blast, a Fighting-type Charge Move, and Acid Spray, a Poison-type one, for its powerful, chargeable attacks.
This Pokemon has a Max CP of 2,441 and boasts stats of 220 Attack, 120 Defense, and 190 Stamina. Unfortunately, due to its Bug type, it has numerous vulnerabilities, making it less than ideal for many battles. If players don’t have the option to trade for evolution, accumulating 200 candies for this Pokemon might not yield a reward worth pursuing.
12 Karrablast To Escavalier
200 Candies
- Type: Bug/Steel
- Best Fast Attack: Counter
- Best Charged Attack: Megahorn
In the primary series of Pokemon games, both Karrablast and Shelmet evade the need for 200 Candy to transform into their second forms (Escavalier and Accelgor respectively) by simply trading them with one another.
As I undergo my evolution, I’ve picked up the Steel secondary type, adding a new layer to my gaming strategy. My Quick Moves are Bug Bite for some creepy-crawly attacks and Counter, where I strike back when provoked. For my Charged Attacks, I’ve got Megahorn (buggy power), Aerial Ace (flying high), Drill Run (ground pounding), and Acid Spray (toxic surprise). With this diverse attack pool, I’m ready to cover a wide range of battles!
The Pokemon in question has a Max CP of 2,889, boasting 223 Attack points, 187 Defense points, and 172 Stamina points. Compared to its sibling Accelgor, Escavalier is generally considered the superior choice among trainers. So, if you’re deciding between these two Pokemon, it’s recommended that you opt for Escavalier.
11 Poipole To Naganadel
200 Candies
- Type: Poison/Dragon
- Best Fast Attack: Air Slash
- Best Charged Attack: Acrobatics
This particular Pokemon, classified as both Poison and Dragon-type, is an Ultra Beast. To make it evolve from Poipole, you’ll need 200 Candies, but there’s a catch – players must also capture 20 Dragon-type Pokémon while the Poipole accompanies them as their buddy. However, Dragons are somewhat scarce in the wild, making this task challenging for many trainers. Fortunately, during the World of Wonders special research event, participants received a Poipole, so acquiring it wasn’t too difficult.
In a fight, Naganadel swiftly uses Air Dash (similar to flying) and Venomous Poke (resembling poison). Its Powerful strikes include Dragon Talons (dragon-like), Sludge Blast (poisonous), Dragon Breath (dragon-esque), Acrobatics (flying) and Stinger Assault (bug-like). Players have numerous strategies when battling with Naganadel against other trainers.
This Pokemon with a maximum Combat Power (CP) of 3587 can make an impressive addition to your team in Pokemon Go, fitting well within the Great League or Ultra League. However, it might struggle in the Master League, given its limitations. At max level, it boasts an Attack of 263, Defense of 159, and Stamina of 177, which is quite respectable.
10 Boldore To Gigalith
200 Candies
- Type: Rock
- Best Fast Attack: Mud Slap
- Best Charged Attack: Solar Beam
200 pieces of Candy are needed to transform Boldore into its ultimate form, Gigalith. This transformation follows a previous 50 Candy evolution from Roggenrola to Boldore.
This Pokémon is a pure Rock type, and it’s one of the best in the game. The shimmering version of this Pokémon is undoubtedly among GameFreak’s finest creations. For quick moves, it can use Mud-Slap (Ground) or Smack Down (Rock). Alternatively, it has access to Rock Slide (Rock), Solar Beam (Grass), Heavy Slam (Steel), and Superpower (Fighting) as its special moves.
This Pokémon can peak at an impressive Max Cp of 3,228, boasting an attack of 226, defense of 201, and stamina of 198. It’s a fantastic choice for a Rock-type, particularly effective against Ice, Flying, Fire, and Bug Pokémon when it unleashes its rocky moves.
9 Gurdurr To Conkeldurr
200 Candies
- Type: Fighting
- Best Fast Attack: Counter
- Best Charged Attack: Focus Blast
To obtain Conkeldurr, players need to collect 200 Candy, starting with 50 Candy from evolving a Timburr first. It’s a significant investment but definitely worth it, as players will end up with a robust Fighting-type Pokemon that performs exceptionally well in Gym Battles, Raids, and the Battle League.
This Pokémon can use Poison Sting (Poison) and Fight Back (Fighting) quickly, plus it has Stone Impact (Rock), Powerful Punch (Fighting) and Concentrated Energy Blast (Charged Move) at its disposal.
Boasting an impressive Max Cp of 3,337, along with 243 Attack points, 158 Defense points, and 233 Stamina, Conkeldurr will effortlessly overpower Rock and Normal type Pokémon, making its costly evolution well worth it.
8 Stufful To Bewear
400 Candies
- Type: Normal/Fighting
- Best Fast Attack: Shadow Claw
- Best Charged Attack: Payback
With an astonishing 400 candies required, gamers must accumulate plenty of Stufful candies to transform this charming Pokemon they call Bewear.
Bewear is a Normal/Fighting Pokemon, a rare combination, and its Quick Moves are Low Kick (Fighting), Shadow Claw (Ghost) and Tackle (Normal). Stomp (Normal), Superpower (Fighting), Payback (Dark) and Drain Punch (Fighting) are the options for Charged attacks.
Bewear has a Max CP of 3,117, boasting an attack of 226, defense of 141, and stamina of 260. This makes Bewear a strong Pokemon to employ in the game due to its versatile move selection. Wise players who took advantage of the Stufful Community Day can easily obtain Bewear’s evolution.
7 Wimpod To Golisopod
400 Candies
- Type: Bug/Water
- Best Fast Attack: Waterfall
- Best Charged Attack: Liquidation
Wimpod also got its own Community Day, providing fans with an excellent opportunity to accumulate candies rapidly since it takes an impressive 400 candies to transform the small insect into the muscular Golisopod.
This Pokemon is a Bug/Water type with an assortment of diverse moves. It uses Fury Cutter (a Bug-type attack), Metal Claw (from the Steel family), Waterfall (a water-based move), and Shadow Claw (belonging to the Ghost category) for Quick Moves. Its Charged Movepool includes Aerial Ace (Flying), Aqua Jet (Water), and X-Scissor (Bug).
This Pokémon has a Max CP of 3.162, but its true strength lies in its well-rounded stats: 218 Attack, 226 Defense, and 181 Stamina. It takes 400 Candies to evolve it. Don’t forget to choose Wimpod as your Buddy Pokémon!
6 Magikarp To Gyarados
400 Candies
- Type: Water/Flying
- Best Fast Attack: Waterfall
- Best Charged Attack: Hydro Pump
Magikarp is a water-based Pokemon that transforms into the dual type Pokemon, Gyarados, which is both Water and Flying, but only after collecting an impressive amount of Candy – specifically 400 pieces. To put it simply, you need a considerable amount to make this transformation.
Gyarados’s swift attacks are Bite (in the dark), Waterfall (of water), Dragon Breath (from the dragon), and Dragon Tail (from the dragon). Its special moves when charging are Hydro Pump (water-based), Outrage (dragon-like), Crunch (dark), Twister (dragon), Aqua Tail (watery), and Dragon Pulse (watery). When it transforms into Shadow form, it uses Frustration (normal), but when Purified, it employs Return (normal).
As a gamer, reaching Level 50 with my Gyarados has been a significant milestone. It boasts a Max CP of 3,834, packing quite a punch with an Attack of 171, a Defense of 150, and Stamina of 172. However, in the Great League, it doesn’t quite excel, but when we move up to the Ultra League, Gyarados truly comes into its own. In the Master League, it holds its ground admirably.
5 Swablu To Altaria
400 Candies
- Type: Dragon/Flying
- Best Fast Attack: Peck
- Best Charged Attack: Moonblast
Swablu, a Pokemon with the ability to fly, transforms into Altaria, both Dragon and Flying types, once it has been filled with an enormous quantity of Candy – around 400 pieces!
Altaria swiftly employs the maneuvers of Dragon Breath, Peck (while in flight), and Charges with Dragon Pulse, Dazzling Gleam (of Fairy type), and Sky Attack.
At level 50, this Pokemon boasts a maximum combat power (CP) of 2,266, an attack stat of 141, a defense stat of 201, and a stamina of 181. Altaria shines exceptionally well in both the Great League and Ultra League. It is highly recommended for those seeking a robust combatant.
4 Wailmer To Wailord
400 Candies
- Type: Water
- Best Fast Attack: Zen Headbutt
- Best Charged Attack: Hyper Beam
Wailmer, a Water-type Pokemon, transforms into Wailord upon consuming a substantial amount of Candy, specifically around 400 pieces. (The pun is that it’s literally swallowing a boatload of Candy.)
Wailord swiftly uses moves like Water Gun (water-based) and Zen Headbutt (psychic). In battle, its charged attacks include Hyper Beam (normal type), Blizzard (ice) and Surf (water).
At level 50, its maximum Combat Power (CP) is 2,577, with an attack of 175, defense of 87, and stamina of 347. However, Wailord’s stat distribution, although seemingly advantageous, falls short in the competitive scenes within the game.
3 Noibat To Noivern
400 Candies
- Type: Flying/Dragon
- Best Fast Attack: Air Slash
- Best Charged Attack: Draco Meteor
The Pokemon named Noibat transforms into Noivern once it bites deeply into a vast pile of about 400 candies. It belongs to both Flying and Dragon types.
Noivern’s swift attacks include Bite in the Darkness and Air Slash when it soars through the Sky. Its powerful charge moves consist of Heat Wave (a fiery attack), Psychic (psychic abilities), Hurricane (a flying assault), and Draco Meteor (an attack from the dragon realm).
At level 50, Noivern boasts a maximum combat power (CP) of 3,125, an attack stat of 205, a defense stat of 175, and a stamina stat of 198. Unfortunately, Noivern doesn’t prove beneficial in any competitive battles.
2 Meltan To Melmetal
400 Candies
- Type: Steel
- Best Fast Attack: Thunder Shock
- Best Charged Attack: Flash Cannon
Meltan transforms into Melmetal when this small, steel-type Pokémon is fed an excessive amount of candy, causing it to burst. (Approximately 400 pieces are needed for the evolution.)
Instead of “Thunder Shock (Electric)”, it can be rephrased as “Its Quick move is Electric Thunder Shock”. For the charge moves, you could use: “Melmetal’s powerful moves include Normal Hyper Beam, Steel Flash Cannon, Rock Slide (Rock), Electric Thunderbolt, and Fighting Superpower.
At level 50, Melmetal boasts a Maximum Combat Power (CP) of 4,069, an Attack stat of 226, Defense at 190, and Stamina standing at 264. In Great League and Ultra League battles, Melmetal is a formidable competitor. However, in the Master League, it takes the crown as the undisputed champion.
1 Getting Candy & Candy XL
How To Get Candy – Catching Pokemon
In Pokemon GO, there are several methods to acquire Candy, and among them, catching Pokemon is one of the most effective strategies. Here’s how much Candy you can earn from catching Pokemon:
- Catching a stage 1 Pokemon – Three Candy
- Catching a stage 2 Pokemon – Five Candy
- Catching a stage 3 Pokemon – 10 Candy
If you want to gather twice as much Candy as usual, remember to use Pinap Berries when feeding your Pokemon. So, it’s advisable to utilize these items if you’re focusing on Candy collection.
How To Get Candy – Hatching Eggs
Each time a trainer successfully hatches an egg, they’ll receive some Candy related to that specific species. The quantity of Candy gained may fluctuate based on the number of steps required to hatch the egg.
- Eggs that take two kilometers or less to hatch will yield between five and 15 Candy
- Eggs that take between five and seven kilometers to hatch will yield between 10 and 21 Candy
- Eggs that take between 10 and 12 kilometers to hatch will yield between 16 and 32 Candy
How To Get Candy – Trading Pokemon
While this strategy may not yield a lot of Candy directly, it can serve as an effective means to accumulate some Candy when trading with a distant trainer.
- Trading Pokemon that were caught less than 10 kilometers from each other will yield one Candy
- Trading Pokemon that were caught between 10 kilometers and 100 kilometers from each other will yield two Candy
- Trading Pokemon that were caught more than 100 kilometers from each other will yield three Candy
How To Get Candy – Other Minor Methods
Collecting Pokémon and hatching eggs is undoubtedly the most effective method for earning Candy, but there are alternative techniques that offer some degree of assistance as well.
- Transferring a Pokemon will yield one Candy
- Evolving a Pokemon will yield one Candy
- Using a Rare Candy will yield one Candy
- Players can use the Buddy mechanic to gain Candy on occasion
- Players can feed their Pokemon berries at a Gym to get Candy on the rare occasion
How To Get Candy XL
To obtain bigger types of Candy, trainers must progress to level 40 first. Only then can they truly begin harvesting them extensively. Additionally, it’s necessary for players to acquire at least one type of XL Candy from a particular species before they can view and start farming these effectively.
Candy XL can be acquired using the same techniques as regular Candy, but only if your trainer level surpasses 40. However, the most dependable method for farming it involves catching specific types of wild Pokémon, with the optimal outcome being when your own Pokémon are at a high level – the higher, the better.
- Catching a Pokemon at a high level can possibly yield between one and three Candy XL
As a dedicated Pokémon trainer, I’d like to share some exciting news about Candy XL acquisition! When you manage to catch a stage 2 Pokémon at higher levels, you’ll definitely receive one Candy XL. Similarly, snagging a stage 3 Pokémon under similar conditions will net you a double reward of two Candy XL. But here’s the real treat – capturing a legendary or mythical Pokémon will ensure a bounty of three Candy XL!
