Pokemon GO Not Adding a Popular Ghost-Type is Missed Halloween Opportunity

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can wholeheartedly say that the absence of Mimikyu in Pokemon GO is akin to a Halloween party without candy – it’s just not right! This adorable yet eerie disguise Pokemon has stolen our hearts ever since its debut in Pokemon Sun and Moon.

Over the past decade, Niantic’s popular augmented reality mobile game, Pokemon GO, has persistently evolved and expanded to captivate both new and seasoned players. An assortment of fresh cosmetic items have been incorporated for trainers to adorn themselves with, featuring beloved Pokemon or holiday-themed accessories. Additionally, research tasks have enriched the gameplay experience by presenting a diverse range of objectives that frequently lead to tempting rewards such as berries, Poke Balls, and even elusive Pokemon. The most acclaimed additions undeniably were the unveiling of numerous Pokemon from Generation 2 to Generation 9. Nevertheless, not every Pokémon has been incorporated into Pokemon GO, with Mimikyu – a suitable choice for the Halloween 2024 event – remaining absent.

Pokemon Sun and Moon’s Mimikyu Explained

From the moment Pikachu took the world by storm in Generation 1, Game Freak has been crafting electrifying rodent counterparts for each subsequent generation, capitalizing on Pikachu’s fame while showcasing each region’s distinctive electric rodent species. This trend began with the baby form of Pikachu, introduced in Generation 2 – Pichu. In Generation 3, we were introduced to Minun and Plusle, electric rodents that, while not direct descendants of our beloved mascot, share similarities through their electric nature and circular cheek pouches. The family tree of these Pikachu-inspired creatures includes Pachirisu, Emolga, Dedenne, Togedemaru, Morpeko, and Pawmi. These electrifying rodents are designed to evoke the image of Pikachu and play in a manner reminiscent of our beloved mascot.

The norm was significantly shifted with the launch of the Seventh Generation games – Pokemon Sun and Moon, as well as Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. In the Alola Region, players discovered a host of distinct electric rodent species. While Pikachus are found across the Alola islands, evolving one in this region results in the transformation of the electric psychic type Alolan Raichu. A visit to Blush Mountain would reveal Togedemaru, modeled after the Ryukyu spiny rat and an electric Steel-Type Pokemon. Upon reaching Ula’ula Island, players would come across a peculiar yet endearing Pikachu variation in the form of the ghost Fairy-Type Pokemon Mimikyu.

Mimikyu’s Instant Popularity

Ever since Mimikyu was first revealed back in 2016, ahead of the release of Sun and Moon, I’ve found myself drawn to this peculiar disguise Pokémon. Fans went wild with memes and fan art featuring the Pikachu lookalike, and it wasn’t long before Mimikyu became a sensation.

In a 2020 survey conducted by The Pokemon Company, Mimikyu was chosen as the most beloved Pokemon from Generation 7.

Mimikyu’s Potential in Pokemon GO

In 2024, during the Halloween events for Pokemon GO, there will be new additions such as spooky costumes for Froakie and Rowlet, Gigantamax Gengar for six-star Max Battles, and perhaps even a debut of Morpeko from Pokemon Sword and Shield for one-star Max Battles. Given that Morpeko, another Pikachu clone, has been introduced, it would be fitting for Mimikyu to join Pokemon GO during the 2025 Halloween event, thereby completing the collection of all Pikachu variants from the Sun and Moon games, as Alolan Raichu and Togedemaru are already present.

In 2025, Mimikyu might headline the Halloween event in Pokemon GO, possibly even starring as the Dynamax boss fight. To emphasize its melancholic yet eerie persona, Niantic could make Mimikyu show up only near shops, schools, or abandoned areas, given that Mimikyu was discovered at an abandoned Thrifty Megamart in Pokemon Sun and Moon and is said to feel lonely. Niantic can also introduce a variety of Mimikyu-themed accessories for trainers as well as the disguise Pokemon itself. Players could buy costumes that resemble Mimikyu’s rags, while Mimikyu could don Halloween-inspired hats or different rag designs based on other popular Pokemon like Charmander, Eevee, Riolu, Meowth, and more.
