Pokemon GO Reveals Community Day Classic Pokemon for January 2026

Pokémon GO has announced that Piplup, a fan-favorite starter Pokémon, will be featured in a special Community Day Classic event in January 2026. The popular mobile game has been keeping players engaged with new Pokémon and shiny versions recently, and is preparing for a holiday event this month with festive Pokémon like Sudowoodo and Charjabug. But developers Scopely are already planning ahead, revealing details about a 2026 Community Day event now.

Community Days are regularly scheduled events in Pokemon GO, happening about once a month. These three-hour events focus on a specific Pokemon, making it appear much more often and offering special rewards for evolving it. They’re also a great opportunity to find shiny versions of that Pokemon, as the shiny encounter rate is significantly increased. The latest Community Day Classic event features a popular starter Pokemon from the Sinnoh region.

Pokemon GO Reveals January 2026 Community Day Classic Pokemon

  • January 4, 2026, from 2pm-5pm local time

Piplup will be the featured Pokémon in the first Pokémon GO Community Day Classic event of 2026! During the event, you’ll find Piplup appearing more often in the wild, and shiny Piplup will be easier to catch. Special research tasks will also be available, offering rewards like Stardust, Great Balls, and more chances to encounter Piplup. If you evolve Piplup into Empoleon during the event, your Empoleon will learn the special Charged Attack, Hydro Cannon. The event will take place on January 4, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time.

The upcoming Piplup event in Pokemon GO offers more than just more Piplup! Players will be encouraged to play more with reduced Egg Hatch Distances – eggs will hatch after only 25% of the usual walking distance. Incense will last three times longer than normal (three hours instead of one), though the Daily Adventure Incense won’t be affected. Lure Modules will also last twice as long, providing boosted spawns for a full hour during the event.

Pokemon GO Has Two Big Community Days Coming in January

Get ready for another Pokémon GO Community Day! Following a Piplup-focused event, January will bring a Community Day featuring Grookey, the Grass-type starter from the eighth generation. From January 18th, you’ll have increased chances of finding Grookey in the wild, and even a chance to catch its rare shiny form. Plus, if you evolve Grookey into Rillaboom during the event, it will learn a special, exclusive move called Drum Beating.

Okay, so Pokemon GO is already looking ahead to 2026! They just wrapped up a big Community Day in December 2025, bringing back all the featured Pokemon from the year. Plus, they finally added the “Forever Friends” feature, which means I can trade with friends anywhere in the world once we max out our friendship levels in the game. It’s awesome to see them listening to the community and adding stuff we’ve been asking for. Honestly, with all the new Pokemon and features they’re planning, 2026 is shaping up to be a great year for Pokemon GO!
