Niantic has announced plans for the 2026 Pokémon GO Fest, including in-person events at three locations and a global version for players worldwide. They’ve also hinted at the return of a popular, rare Legendary Pokémon. While details about the global event are still limited, the annual event is set to return with both in-person and worldwide participation.
Niantic is constantly adding new Pokémon to Pokémon GO, drawing from all generations of games, from the original Kanto region to the newest, Paldea. Recently, they introduced Flamigo with a special, limited-time event. Despite having a huge number of Pokémon available, Niantic plans to bring back a beloved classic later this year.
Mewtwo Returns to Pokemon GO in 2026
At a recent Go Fest 2026 press conference in Tokyo, Japan, Niantic shared details about the upcoming event and unveiled the official artwork. The art features a variety of Pokémon, including Articuno, Sandile, Lapras, a special Paldean Tauros, and others. Mewtwo is prominently displayed in the artwork, appearing to float above all the other Pokémon.
It looks like players in different parts of the world will have a chance to catch different Legendary Kanto Birds: Japan will feature Articuno, Chicago will have Zapdos, and Copenhagen will offer Moltres. Based on the key art, it’s expected that Spark will be associated with the US event, and Candela with the Denmark event. While some fans might be disappointed that these birds are region-exclusive, the good news is Mewtwo will be available worldwide at all events. Although not officially confirmed, a staff member strongly hinted at this, suggesting players pay close attention to the Pokémon shown in the key art – especially Mewtwo.
I can’t share details just yet, but pay close attention to the Pokémon shown in the official artwork – especially Mewtwo! I think longtime GO Fest players are in for a really thrilling experience.
It’s been nearly four years since Mewtwo was widely available in Pokémon GO. While a Shadow version of Mewtwo returned in 2024, the original Mewtwo hasn’t been seen since February 2022, with a brief reappearance in a few Legendary Raids later that year. Given how strong and rare Mewtwo is, Niantic hasn’t made it frequently available, making this return a good chance for players who didn’t catch it before.
Players are buzzing with theories about what Mewtwo’s return means for Pokémon GO. Some are excited about a special event or a nostalgic nod to the first Go Fest. But many hope this signals the arrival of Mewtwo’s Mega X and Y forms, which haven’t been available in the game yet. With Mega Victreebell and Malamar coming from Pokémon Legends: Z-A, players are optimistic that Mewtwo will receive the same treatment.

Zeraora, a Pokémon first seen in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, is a strong contender. People believe this because of the logo’s colors and what look like small blue lightning bolts. Although not confirmed, it would make sense for the game to also include Zeraora’s new Mega Evolution, which was recently featured in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

We expect to hear updates during Pokémon Day on February 27th, possibly with a Pokémon Presents presentation outlining plans for the franchise’s 30th anniversary. Pokémon GO Fest begins in Japan on May 29th, followed by events in Chicago, Illinois on June 5th, and Copenhagen, Denmark on June 12th.
