Pokemon GO: Which Path to Choose for Legends: Z-A Celebration Event? (Chikorita, Totodile, or Tepig)

To mark the release of *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* on Nintendo Switch, *Pokemon GO* is hosting a special event called the *Pokemon Legends: Z-A Celebration Event*. The event focuses on the starter Pokemon from *Z-A* – Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile – and players can earn Candy to evolve them by completing limited-time research tasks. These Pokemon will also appear during some of the tasks, depending on which research path you select.

The current free Timed Research in *Pokémon GO* has three stages. You’ll choose one of three paths based on your favorite starter Pokémon. Here’s a breakdown of the tasks and rewards for each path, plus a look at which one offers the most benefits for battling.

Chikorita Path, Explained in Pokemon GO Z-A Celebration Event

If you select the Chikorita Timed Research, here’s a look at the tasks you’ll need to complete and the rewards you’ll earn.

  • Step 1
    • Explore 1km – 25 Chikorita Candy
      • Total Reward: Chikorita Encounter
  • Step 2
    • Power up Grass-type Pokemon 20 times – 50 Chikorita Candy
    • Use 25k Stardust – 50 Chikorita Candy
      • Total Reward: 6000 XP and 10 Poke Balls
  • Step 3
    • Evolve a Bayleef – Razz Berry x3
    • Earn 12 Hearts with your buddy – Pinap Berries x3
      • Total Reward: Poffin and 12 Chikorita Candy XL

Just a heads-up, whichever starter Pokémon you pick at the beginning, you’ll see them pop up more often when you use the Daily Adventure Incense. It’s like the incense is biased towards your chosen buddy – pretty cool, right?

Totodile Path, Explained in Pokemon GO Z-A Celebration Event

If you choose the Totodile path for the Timed Research, you will get the following tasks and rewards:

  • Step 1
    • Explore 1km – 25 Totodile Candy
      • Total Reward: Totodile Encounter
  • Step 2
    • Power up Water-type Pokemon 20 times – 50 Totodile Candy
    • Use 25k Stardust – 50 Totodile Candy
      • Total Reward: 6000 XP and 10 Poke Balls
  • Step 3
    • Evolve a Croconaw – Razz Berry x3
    • Earn 12 Hearts with your buddy – Pinap Berries x3
      • Total Reward: Poffin and 12 Totodile Candy XL

Tepig Path, Explained in Pokemon GO Z-A Celebration Event

If you choose the Tepig path for the Timed Research, you will get the following tasks and rewards:

  • Step 1
    • Explore 1km – 25 Tepig Candy
      • Total Reward: Tepig Encounter
  • Step 2
    • Power up Fire-type Pokemon 20 times – 50 Tepig Candy
    • Use 25k Stardust – 50 Tepig Candy
      • Total Reward: 6000 XP and 10 Poke Balls
  • Step 3
    • Evolve a Pignite – Razz Berry x3
    • Earn 12 Hearts with your buddy – Pinap Berries x3
      • Total Reward: Poffin and 12 Tepig Candy XL

So, Is Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile the Best Choice?

As a dedicated Pokémon GO player, I always say that if you’re missing any of the original three starter Pokémon – and their evolved forms, of course – it’s totally worth putting in the effort to catch them and complete your Pokédex!

If you’re interested in using your starter Pokémon in competitive battles, Totodile is the best choice. Its final form, Feraligatr, is much stronger than the other two starter evolutions and learns Hydro Cannon, one of the most powerful Water-type moves available.
