As a dedicated Pokemon Go player with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel frustrated and perplexed by the recent trend of trainers leaving Gyms empty after clearing them out. This practice has been increasingly common since July 2024, making it impossible for players like me to collect any PokeCoins.
In Pokemon Go, gyms are the sole locations for earning PokeCoins. Therefore, it’s puzzling to find these gyms abandoned by trainers after they have defeated the defenders, preventing others from collecting any coins.
Since last summer in July 2024, this unusual phenomenon has been gaining popularity, and individuals attempting to place their Pokemon in these unmarked Gyms are being swiftly removed. Previously, those who were displaced would be promptly replaced by other teams. However, now, these vacated Gyms remain empty for extended periods of time.
To obtain the maximum of 50 PokeCoins per day, Pokémon defenders must remain in Gyms for a minimum of eight hours. However, clearing Gyms too quickly will yield no coins at all.
The frequent incidents are causing frustration for many people, leading “c4mh4z3” on Reddit to ponder if it’s necessary to contact Niantic Support about the issue.

Some people shared that they have experienced the same situation, leaving them perplexed, much like the original poster.
Players expressed their frustration, saying, “A gym just a few blocks away from me remains unused inexplicably. I’m baffled as to who is responsible for its emptiness.” They added that these unoccupied gyms are a mystery.
The more we saw similar instances occur, the more users discovered they shared common experiences, with nobody appearing to take control over the Gym.
I’ve played Pokemon Go for quite some time now, and I’ve come to realize that there are players who use third-party apps to spoof their locations, allowing them to appear as if they were in different parts of the world. This is a clear violation of Niantic’s terms of service, and I’ve seen firsthand how these players are often caught and banned. However, no matter how strict the measures, there always seem to be a few of these individuals lurking around.
Supporters critically commented on certain players for employing the strategy of preventing others from gathering Coins from Gyms due to their own inability to do so. Notably, this behavior is increasingly prevalent and raises concerns among the community.
Spoofers aren’t the only ones under suspicion, as one person shared, “My husband and I used to find amusement in watching the commotion among players in our town when someone became excessively protective over gyms.”
To make your Gyms in Pokemon Go more challenging for opponents to take over, build up friendships within the game and deploy larger Defender Pokemon such as Goodra or Blissey.
