- Scopely assures players of continued service and promises to maintain existing features.
- A recent meeting in Japan clarified Scopely’s commitment to Pokemon GO’s future and shared vision with Niantic.
In simpler terms, there’s been no confirmation from Pokemon GO’s leadership or Niantic, the original publisher and developer, that the game will be closing down. Instead, a meeting between these two companies hinted at Pokemon GO continuing to operate as usual under its new management by Scopely. However, players can expect some fresh, innovative features in the future.
Initially, fans had worries when they heard in March that Scopely had bought Pokemon GO, which Niantic had developed for over eight years. However, senior product director Michael Steranka promptly reassured players, highlighting Scopely’s achievements in the mobile gaming market and dismissing concerns about excessive ads or selling of player data to external parties. In an interview following the acquisition announcement, he clarified that Scopely does not trade user data, and the new development team maintains that advertisements would never be suitable for Pokemon GO.
In a meeting held on April 9 in Japan, the two companies discussed plans for future updates to their mobile game. According to ITMedia Mobile, this discussion can be summarized into two main points. Firstly, Scopely will carry on enhancing features that align with the Pokemon franchise, similar to how Niantic has added elements like Max Pokemon and the GO Battle League since the game’s debut in 2016. Secondly, most of the current features are expected to stay consistent under the new management. This appears to be a reinforcement of game director Ed Wu’s statement from March that Pokemon GO will continue to evolve as it has always been an ongoing project.
Pokemon GO Will Remain Relatively the Same Under Scopely
At the recent gathering, an unidentified representative from Scopely made a noteworthy remark: they have no intention of discontinuing their service for the game we all love. This decision was driven by Scopely’s alignment with Niantic’s vision for Pokemon GO, coupled with its impressive market performance and the positive player sentiment it enjoys.
The meeting wasn’t primarily organized to allay any apprehensions among fans, but rather to publicize the Japanese launch of the GO Stamp Rally event. This event is exclusive to Japan, however, players in the western world can look forward to a host of fresh activities such as discovering a new Gen 8 Pokemon in Pokemon GO and preparing for the forthcoming Raid Day on April 13.
