  • “Focusing on Galar Pokemon makes sense for Pokemon GO in terms of marketing and long-term strategy.”

As a devoted Pokémon enthusiast who has been capturing pocket monsters since the days of Game Boy and Red & Blue, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia with the latest rumors swirling around about the potential addition of Dynamax and Gigantamax in Pokémon GO.

Over time, updates have transformed Pokemon GO into a stronghold for players’ beloved gameplay elements and creatures from the entire series. The introduction of Generation 8 introduced significant changes that some longtime fans found challenging, such as the elimination of the National Dex, leaving many wondering when their favorite pocket monsters would return. A common request has been to reinstate Mega Evolution in both casual and competitive Pokemon play. However, Pokemon GO is still not complete and certain omissions are quite ironic.

As a dedicated Pokémon fan, I can’t help but notice the significant difference between the Pokémon Sword and Shield experience and what Pokémon GO has to offer in terms of Galar Pokémon and content. Despite the five-year gap since their release, recent updates and some sleuthing by dataminers have uncovered icons and other hints suggesting that Dynamax and Gigantamax could be making their way to Pokémon GO.

Dynamax and Gigantamax Should Bring Everything They Can From Galar

Introducing Gigantamax and Dynamax features into Pokemon GO opens up an exciting prospect for future updates to enrich the game by addressing its current Generation 8 gaps. Although the game boasts a vast array of creatures to catch and numerous events, it has been focusing on Alola’s and Paldea’s Pokedex at the expense of Galar’s for quite some time now. This has left fans of Pokemon Sword and Shield feeling disappointed as many desired additions from each region are available except for Generation 8, with the notable absence of Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble from the game’s roster, despite other starters already being present.

Essentially, only a small number of Pokemon from the Galar region are presently available in Pokemon GO, with the majority being introduced when Pokemon Sword and Shield were initially previewed. This was mainly achieved by releasing regional variants like Galarian Weezing and Galarian Meowth, while the exclusive Pokemon related to their evolutionary lines were added concurrently. The last time a new Galar Pokemon was incorporated into the game was again through regional variants, in the form of the Galarian legendary birds. Given this, it’s clear that content featuring Pokemon from Sword and Shield is long past due.

Why Pokemon GO Focusing on Galar For a While Makes Sense

Pokemon GO's Recent Feature Tease Should Open the Gen 8 Floodgates

Initially, Pokemon GO introduced new regions and catchable creatures gradually for a while. However, there’s a significant factor influencing the strategic choices made for the game in the long run, which is marketing. Many Pokemon added to Pokemon GO over the years have been connected to marketing trends related to the mainline games, with Galarian Meowth and Weezing being clear examples of this trend.

Title for the upcoming “Pokemon” game, “Pokemon Legends Z-A,” has enthusiasts buzzing due to its return to the Kalos region and potential revival of Mega Evolution. Given that Kalos draws inspiration from France and Galar pays homage to the United Kingdom, it’s possible for these two worlds to intertwine in “Pokemon GO,” creating an intriguing crossover. This move would satiate long-time fans of Galar, who have eagerly awaited specific creatures on their mobile AR journey for five years. Moreover, “Pokemon Legends Z-A” could offer unexpected surprises to even the most dedicated series followers. However, it’s important to note that this is mere speculation and it remains uncertain whether Dynamax and Gigantamax will bring Galar’s unique Pokemon to players or not. The ultimate decision lies with “Pokemon GO,” and only time will reveal how they choose to incorporate the entire Kalos Pokedex into their game.
