Recent leaks suggest that *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* was initially going to take place in the Johto region. However, The Pokemon Company ultimately chose the Kalos region and Lumiose City as the game’s setting. The project was also reportedly planned as two separate versions, one focusing on Ho-Oh and the other on Lugia, before being combined into a single title.
The Johto region was introduced in *Pokemon Gold and Silver* as the area next to the original Kanto region. It’s based on the Kansai area of Japan, which includes cities like Kyoto and Osaka. *Gold and Silver* added 100 new Pokemon and several features that are now essential to the series, including items Pokemon can hold, Pokemon Eggs, the Dark and Steel types, and the rare, differently colored Shiny Pokemon. These games were also the first to feature Legendary Pokemon – Ho-Oh and Lugia – on the game packaging.
Pokemon Legends Could Have Been Based On Johto’s Past
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of *Pokemon Gold and Silver* in 2024, Nintendo originally intended to create *Pokemon Legends* games based on those titles. According to a reliable *Pokemon* leaker named Centro, the upcoming *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* was first planned as *Pokemon Legends: Ho-Oh and Lugia*, with two separate game versions. Like *Pokemon Legends: Arceus*, which took place in an ancient version of Sinnoh, these games would have been set in the past – specifically, the Johto region. The story would have explored the origins of Pokemon trainers and explained how the legendary Pokemon Raikou, Entei, and Suicune came to be after the Brass Tower was destroyed by fire.
It’s currently a mystery why The Pokemon Company decided to set the new *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* game in the Kalos region instead of Johto. As with any leaked information about *Pokemon*, it’s best to be skeptical. However, the leaks shared by Centro regarding *Pokemon Legends: Ho-Oh and Lugia* were part of a larger wave of information that appeared on October 13th. These leaks detailed *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* and also hinted at the next generation of core *Pokemon* games.
Although it’s unclear if or when we’ll see a new *Pokémon* game set in the Johto region, the ideas originally considered for that setting ultimately led to *Pokémon Legends: Z-A*. As fans eagerly await their return to the Kalos region in *Pokémon Legends: Z-A*, only time will tell if The Pokémon Company decides to explore Johto again.
