Pokémon Legends Z-A, the newest main installment in the popular Pokémon series, has quickly become a hit with both critics and players. Although some fans were initially upset about the announcement of the “Mega Dimension” expansion before the game was even released, the game itself turned out so well that excitement for the DLC is now very high.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A is easily one of the strongest Pokemon games released in the last ten years, but there’s still room for improvement. The upcoming Mega Dimension DLC could turn this already great game into a true classic, and here are eight ideas that, if implemented well, could help Game Freak make that happen.
New Mega Evolutions Of Kalos Pokemon
There Are Still So Many Gen Six Pokemon That Desperately Need An Upgrade
As a long-time Pokémon fan, I’m seriously hyped about Pokémon Legends: Z-A! But honestly, the biggest thing for me is the new Mega Evolutions. It’s amazing to see some older Pokémon get a real power-up, and they’ve done it with some seriously cool designs! We’re talking about Pokémon like Dragonite finally getting the Mega Evolution fans have wanted for years, plus some awesome new forms for Pokémon from the Gen 6 days like Hawlucha. They even took some risks with Pokémon like Starmie, and the results are fantastic! It really feels like these Mega Evolutions are giving a fresh boost to some of my all-time favorites.
As a huge Pokémon fan, I was really hoping to see more Mega Evolutions in Legends: Z-A, especially for some of the Kalos Pokémon! There are so many that feel like they deserve them – Aurorus, Tyrantrum, Clawitzer, Noivern, Goodra, even the legendaries Yveltal and Xerneas! Luckily, we already know that the Mega Dimension DLC is bringing Mega Evolutions for Raichu, which is awesome, but I’m crossing my fingers that’s not all! I really think the DLC will add even more.
The Return Of Older Pokemon
The Game’s Pokedex Needs A Major Shake-Up
Despite being set entirely in Lumiose City, Pokemon Legends: Z-A manages to include a good mix of Pokemon from Generation Six, as well as many from earlier and later generations. However, some surprisingly popular Pokemon aren’t included in the game’s Pokedex, such as the starters from the Hoenn region (all of which can Mega Evolve), the Zubat family, and the Flygon line.
The upcoming Mega Dimension DLC for Legends: Z-A will focus heavily on Hoopa and its unique portals. Hoopa previously played a key role in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, unlocking many Legendary and Mythical Pokémon for players to catch, and we expect a similar feature in this DLC. While catching these rare Pokémon is exciting, it’s also important that Mega Dimension includes plenty of regular Pokémon, especially if it introduces new areas to explore.
Brand-New Pokemon
Fixing One Of Legends: Z-A’s Biggest Flaws
As a huge Pokémon fan, I was so excited for Pokémon Legends: Z-A when they announced it would bring back Mega Evolution! It’s been a while since we’ve seen those awesome transformations, and the game definitely centers around them. But honestly? While Mega Evolution is cool, it doesn’t quite feel like enough. Arceus did such a great job of introducing totally new Pokémon, and Z-A just doesn’t have that same feeling of discovery. It’s a fun addition, but it’s not the same as getting brand new creatures to catch and train.
Fans were excited about the possibility of Legends: Z-A introducing new Pokemon, either regional versions inspired by the Kalos region (like the Hisuian forms in Legends: Arceus) or entirely new evolutions across different generations (similar to Pokemon like Wyrdeer, Kleavor, and Basculegion). However, the game didn’t add any new Pokemon at all, instead focusing on Mega Evolutions. The upcoming DLC offers Game Freak a great opportunity to address this, potentially adding a variety of previously unseen creatures, particularly if Hoopa’s story allows players to explore areas beyond Kalos.
More Boss Fights
Fighting Rogue Mega Evolved Pokemon Should Be A Prominent Part Of The DLC
Pokémon Legends: Arceus started a new trend with action-packed boss battles against Noble Pokémon, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A built on that idea, making the fights with Rogue Mega Evolved Pokémon some of the most exciting and difficult in the series. While not all Mega Evolutions were featured as bosses, it would be great to see the remaining ones added in the Mega Dimension DLC.
Past expansions, such as The Crown Tundra for Sword and Shield or The Indigo Disk for Scarlet and Violet, centered around challenging raid battles against Legendary Pokémon. It’s likely that the new Mega Dimension expansion will continue this trend, requiring players to defeat any new Legendary Pokémon or Mega Evolutions in real-time battles before they can be caught.
True Wild Areas
It’d Be Great To Actually Catch Pokemon In The Wild Again
In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the city of Lumiose is a bustling urban center, so wild Pokemon are found in designated Wild Zones – small, abandoned areas on the map. This system works well with the game’s engaging gameplay, but a potential Mega Dimension expansion could add even more variety and excitement.
While the wild areas in Legends: Z-A can sometimes feel limited, the larger, more open environments in Legends: Arceus were much more fun to explore and discover Pokémon. The upcoming Mega Dimension DLC should introduce new areas filled with Pokémon, and Lumiose City could remain a central hub for battling other trainers whenever players like.
New Areas To Explore
Walking Around Lumiose City Is Getting Boring Already
A major complaint about Pokemon Legends: Z-A is that the entire game is limited to Lumiose City. While this focus has allowed the developers to create a polished and relatively bug-free experience – a welcome change after the somewhat glitchy Scarlet and Violet – it also makes the environments feel repetitive. Players also can’t visit any other familiar locations from the Kalos region.
To make the Mega Dimension DLC even better, the game really needs new environments. Imagine exploring locations with unique landscapes, atmospheres, plants, and animals – especially if it’s a fresh take on a familiar Kalos city like Anistar or Geosenge. This would add much-needed variety, keeping exploration and research more appealing than just battling.
More Returning Characters
A Lot Of Important Kalosian Figures Were Absent From The Base Game
The story of Pokemon Legends: Z-A is set five years after Pokemon X and Y, allowing fans to reconnect with familiar faces like Emma and AZ. Despite this, many important characters from the Kalos region were noticeably absent, even those who typically live in Lumiose City.
Professor Sycamore is away doing research, and Mable is filling in for him. Detective Looker is currently working in Alola, and Clemont and Bonnie had to leave Prism Tower due to issues with Quasartico Inc. Champion Diantha is reportedly focusing on her acting career. It would be fantastic to encounter these familiar faces in Mega Dimension, and given Game Freak’s history, we might even see characters from other regions like Leon from Galar or Anabel from Hoenn appear in the DLC as well.
A Small Taste Of Generation Ten
The Next Pokemon Generation Is Closer Than It Seems
Many Pokémon fans might not know, but it looks like we’ll find out about Generation Ten around early 2026. This is especially likely because February will be the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise – around the time Mega Dimension is expected to launch. The next generation is probably coming out next year, and Game Freak might give us a sneak peek with a hint hidden in the upcoming Legends: Z-A DLC.
Pokémon has a history of subtly hinting at future games before they’re officially revealed. Even a small detail related to Generation Ten – like an item, image, or brief description – could spark months of fan speculation. Alternatively, Game Freak could really excite fans by including a Generation Ten character or Pokémon in the Mega Dimension DLC, even if it’s not catchable. That would be a welcome surprise for the community.
