It’s reported that while two new Mega Evolutions have been confirmed for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, there could potentially be as many as 24 more yet to be unveiled according to leaks. The newly announced Mega Dragonite and Mega Victreebel are joining the series, bringing the number of Gen 1 Pokemon with Mega Evolutions up to 15. With just a few months until the release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it remains uncertain how many more Megas will be officially showcased. However, recent leaks suggest that designs for several rumored Pokemon may have been revealed.
As I sifted through the posts on the PokeLeaks subreddit, my eyes were drawn to an intriguing claim – supposedly, a leak from the elusive 4Chan reveals the design for Mega Zygarde! If this leak turns out to be true, it’s going to be quite the departure from Zygarde’s existing forms. You see, as one of Kalos’ Legendary trio, Zygarde already has three distinct shapes in its arsenal, and if this Mega Evolution leak holds water, there might just be a fourth on the horizon.
The leaked image of Mega Zygarde is a bit tricky to decipher, but it seems like our monstrous friend is morphing into a missile-like form. This design brings me back to the “Pokemon Gun” meme that took off in Gen 8 – talk about a blast from the past!
Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Leaked Mega Zygarde Design Channels the ‘Pokemon Gun’ Meme
The Origins of the ‘Pokemon Gun’ Meme
In early 2019 when Pokemon Sword and Shield were initially unveiled, there hadn’t been any DLC or expansions in the series before, and it was typical to have a third version or versions. Since “Sword” and “Shield” suggest weapons, the Pokemon community frequently joked that the third generation 8 game would be called “Pokemon Gun.” Although this game never appeared, Sword and Shield were the first games in the Pokemon series to get DLC instead of a third version with enhancements. Despite this, the joke about a “Pokemon Gun” continued and became one of the most well-known jokes among fans of that generation.

Many versions of the “Pokémon Gun” internet joke depict a gun designed similarly to the logos of Sword and Shield, with Grookey usually shown wielding the firearm. Despite this, The Pokémon Company typically avoids incorporating guns into the Pokémon franchise, making a game like that unlikely. However, the meme gained such popularity that some media outlets inaccurately reported Pokémon Gun as an official Gen 8 game release.
In early 2024, I got my hands on Palworld – a game that’s been dubbed as “Pokémon meets shoot-em-ups.” This release definitely sparked some excitement among gamers and even breathed new life into the good old Pokémon Gun meme!
Mega Zygarde Could Be Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Secret Weapon
If the rumored design of Mega Zygarde turns out to be true in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it could potentially be the Pokemon franchise’s long-awaited “Pokemon Gun” interpretation. Though Mega Zygarde doesn’t resemble a gun itself, its depiction holding a missile is the most weapon-like portrayal the series has ever shown. Given that Pokemon X and Y had one of the darkest narratives in the series with their Ultimate Weapon plot and Team Flare Leader Lysandre’s ambition to eliminate imperfection, it seems plausible for Pokemon Legends: Z-A to continue this ominous storytelling trend.

In the upcoming game Pokemon Legends: Z-A, there are rumors that Lysandre may reappear as the villain. It’s said that he will require the player to collect scattered Zygarde Cells across Lumiose City and place them in the Zygarde Cube. This could lead to a climax where Lysandre attempts to convert the Legendary Zygarde into its Mega form, using it as a replacement for the destroyed Ultimate Weapon from Pokemon X and Y’s Team Flare arc. However, there are whispers that this design of Mega Zygarde could be a fake leak. To confirm whether this is true or not, we will have to wait until the release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, as it’s highly unlikely that they would reveal a significant plot point prematurely.
