Pokemon Legends: Z-A Fans Are Heartbroken After the Final Side Mission

Pokemon Legends: Z-A spoilers ahead.

Many fans who finished the final side quest in Pokemon Legends: Z-A have called it incredibly sad, mirroring the emotional impact of the main story. Despite the Pokemon series often being seen as games for children or criticized for simple storylines – a perception made worse by the lack of voice acting in Pokemon Legends: Z-A – this newest installment proves to be a surprisingly strong example of storytelling. The game builds to a powerful emotional peak in Mission 37, and then provides a satisfying conclusion through Missions 38-42, demonstrating a level of depth rarely seen in Pokemon games.

The Pokemon games often include moments that can be genuinely upsetting – like a rare, shiny Pokemon running away before you can catch it, or realizing your favorite creatures aren’t included in the game’s Pokedex and might not come back. But many players find the story in Pokemon Legends: Z-A to be the most emotionally impactful part. This approach of building connections between characters and delivering a touching conclusion is similar to what Game Freak did with the previous generation of Pokemon games.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Goodbye, Gengar Mission is Officially the Saddest in The Game

The last side quest, “Goodbye, Gengar,” takes place in the familiar building from the main story where you encountered the Rust Syndicate. Ganger needs help with a Gengar he’s been caring for – even though it’s still a wild Pokémon – and asks both the player and Gwynn to assist.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A features 119 side quests, but the very last one is a bit unusual. Technically, it’s considered more of a running joke and requires completing the Infinite Z-A Royale 20 times to unlock – much more than the 15 completions needed to finish the main game. Because of this, most players consider Side Mission 118 to be the true final side quest.

Ganger is heartbroken that he can’t find Gengar, despite searching everywhere. He realizes he should have asked Gengar to be his partner and deeply misses their connection, even noticing that the call of another Gengar doesn’t sound quite right – a sign of how much he loves his Gengar. Like the ending of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the “Goodbye, Gengar” side quest is sad. Ganger eventually gives up the search, and players receive 4,000 Pokedollars, two Exp Candy L, and one Exp Candy XL as a reward.

The ending left many fans disappointed because it suggests Ganger has come to terms with losing his opportunity to be Gengar’s trainer and won’t see him again. This is particularly painful for a series that’s all about the bond between people and their Pokémon. To make matters worse, in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Gengar is first available to catch as a fixed encounter in the very same old house where Ganger originally met his Gengar.

Many players shared their emotional reactions to the ‘Goodbye, Gengar’ quest on Twitter, with one user, @scottlennon0605, saying it was particularly heartbreaking. However, there’s a heartwarming surprise for those who felt sad after finishing the quest: revisiting Gengar’s old location triggers a new, happier cutscene. With the Mega Dimension DLC for Pokemon Legends: Z-A on the way, fans are hoping for more quests like this, even if they’re a little sad, as they offer meaningful experiences.
