Pokemon Legends: Z-A Has New Free Downloads You Can Claim Right Now

I’m so excited! The Pokémon Company just started a new event in Pokémon Legends: Z-A where you can get Alpha versions of Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile! For anyone who hasn’t played it yet, Pokémon Legends: Z-A came out last year on both the new Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Switch. It’s set in Lumiose City and feels like a real sequel to Pokémon X and Y, finally wrapping up some of the storylines we were left with in those 3DS games – and it even continues the stories of some of the characters we met back then!

A recent update to Pokemon Home now lets players transfer Pokemon from older games into Pokemon Legends: Z-A. This update also prepares for the launch of Pokemon Champions on April 8th. Pokemon Champions is a free-to-start game where players worldwide can battle each other, and they can use Pokemon they’ve trained in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

How to Get Alpha Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

  • Update Pokemon Home and Pokemon Legends: Z-A to their latest versions
  • Save your game in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
  • Go into Pokemon Home on Switch or Switch 2 and transfer any Pokemon over from Pokemon Legends: Z-A
  • Access Pokemon Home on a mobile device
  • Players will be prompted to accept the Mystery Gifts when the app is launched

To mark the latest update to Pokemon Home, players can now receive Alpha versions of the three starter Pokemon from Pokemon Legends: Z-A: Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile. First, make sure both Pokemon Home and Pokemon Legends: Z-A are updated to the newest versions. Then, save your game in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Next, open Pokemon Home on your Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 console and transfer at least one Pokemon from the game to the app. After saving and exiting, launch Pokemon Home on your mobile device to receive the Alpha starters.

When Pokémon HOME launches on mobile, players will meet Poke Boy, who will guide them to the Mystery Gift section to claim Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile. You’ll be able to give each Pokémon a nickname. After that, you can transfer these three starter Pokémon from Pokémon HOME to Pokémon Legends: Z-A. They’ll arrive at level 5, each knowing a special move normally learned through a TM: Chikorita will know Dazzling Gleam, Tepig will know Wild Charge, and Totodile will know Dragon Claw. These starters can only be transferred to Pokémon Legends: Z-A and nowhere else. While some players might find this limiting, it’s great news for those eager to obtain the new Mega Evolutions for Meganium, Emboar, and Feraligatr in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Pokemon Home users have been enjoying regular Mystery Gift distributions, and the recent Alpha forms of Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile are the newest addition. For some time, Pokemon Home has also let players receive a Magearna in its original coloring, and that offer is still available. To qualify, players need to have registered all 890 Pokemon in the National Pokedex within Pokemon Home. Now, with the latest updates, this Magearna can be transferred to Pokemon Legends: Z-A and even Mega Evolve. While the standard color of Magearna is already in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the original color variant will have its own Pokedex entry the first time it Mega Evolves. If you haven’t completed the National Pokedex in Pokemon Home yet, this might be the motivation you need to finish it!
