Pokemon Legends Z-A: How Does Obedience Work?

In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, catching very powerful Pokemon can be tricky. These strong Pokemon might not listen to your commands during battles, making them difficult to use until you learn how to gain their respect and cooperation.

The game features powerful Alpha Pokemon, which can sometimes be much higher level than the player when first encountered. If you want to use these stronger Pokemon in battle, you’ll need to learn how to get them to listen to you. Here’s a guide on how to do that.

How to Make Pokemon Obey in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

How to Make Pokemon Listen to Commands

In *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, whether a Pokemon listens to you depends on your Trainer Rank in the Z-A Royale and how high its level was when you first caught it. Each Rank you achieve corresponds to a specific Pokemon level. If a Pokemon is caught at or below that level, it will obey you. However, if you catch a Pokemon that’s already a higher level than your current Rank allows, it won’t listen.

In *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, you can see your current level cap by saving the game. It’s shown right above the “Save Progress” indicator.

If your Pokémon isn’t listening to you during battles, the only way to fix it is to raise your Trainer Rank in Z-A Royale. Each time you increase your rank, you’ll be able to command Pokémon of a higher level – specifically, the level limit goes up by five levels with each rank. For example, if you’re currently at Royale Rank Y and can control Pokémon up to level 25, reaching Rank X will let you command Pokémon up to level 30. Once you reach the maximum rank of A, all your Pokémon will obey you.

Okay, so I learned something kinda tricky about catching Gyarados in Z-A Royale. If you snag one at level 32 while you’re still at Rank X (which has a level cap of 30), it’s gonna be a rebel and won’t listen to me. But, once I rank up to Rank W (where the level cap is 35), suddenly that Gyarados starts obeying! And get this – even if I then train it *past* level 35 while still at Rank W, it *still* listens. Basically, it all comes down to what level the Gyarados was when I first caught it, not how high I level it up later. That’s good to know!

As you reach Rank V (level 40) during the main storyline, you’ll automatically be promoted to Rank F (level 60). This promotion is required and cannot be skipped.

How to Make Traded Pokemon Obey

Pokémon received through trades are treated as “outsider” Pokémon, and how well they listen to you depends on their level when they were traded. The game uses the level at which you received the Pokémon as the basis for determining obedience, as if you had caught it at that level yourself.

This rule doesn’t apply to Pokémon that are traded and then returned to their original trainer. When a Pokémon comes back to the trainer it originally belonged to, it’s not considered an outsider. For instance, if you trade a Haunter to a friend and they evolve it into a Gengar, that Gengar won’t be an outsider Pokémon when you trade it back.
