Fans of the Pokémon series are expressing disappointment with the new Mega Evolution designs in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. While some were initially concerned about the lack of new Pokémon species in the game, many were excited about the return of Mega Evolution – a popular feature first introduced in Generation 6. It reappeared in updated versions of older games and even in Generation 7, before being put on hold for a while. Now that Mega Evolutions are back, supposedly for good thanks to Pokémon Champions, players are comparing the new designs in Z-A to previous versions, and the response has been largely negative.
Certain Mega Evolutions are consistently popular with players and see frequent use in games whenever they appear. Others remain less popular and don’t have a strong following, but Mega Charizard X and Y, for example, always generate a lot of discussion. While not all of the new Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A are hits, that’s always been true – some Mega Evolutions are more like fun ideas than universally beloved designs.
Some Old and New Pokemon Mega Evolutions Never Were Great to Begin With
A Reddit user named Embrace_Wind started a discussion comparing older and newer Mega Evolution designs. They used Mega Ampharos and Mega Blastoise (from the Generation 6 games) alongside the more recent Mega Golurk and Mega Froslass as examples. While Mega Ampharos was an intriguing idea, it wasn’t popular when it first came out. Mega Blastoise, however, became something of a running joke among fans because its design replaced its two rear cannons with one large one, and added small, shell-shooting water cannons on its arms that looked like they came from the Super Mario games.

Honestly, when people talk about disappointing Mega Evolutions, Mega Venusaur always comes up. It feels like they just stuck a bunch more leaves and vines on it, and plopped a flower on its head! I think Gigantamax Venusaur is way better, and honestly, the ideas behind both aren’t that different. I much prefer the Gigantamax version.
As a long-time Pokémon fan, I have to say the Mega Evolutions revealed in Pokémon Legends: Z-A haven’t exactly been a hit with everyone. Take Mega Feraligatr, for example – when the initial design leaked, people immediately started calling it the “skibidi toilet,” and that nickname stuck! A lot of us were hoping the big Totodile head that pops up during certain attacks would be a permanent feature, but it’s just a temporary thing. Then there’s Mega Pyroar, which a lot of fans disliked right away because of its silly-looking mane – it basically just mashed the male and female designs together. And don’t even get me started on Mega Starmie! It’s become a joke because it just… has longer legs. It feels like some of these designs didn’t quite land with what fans were hoping for.
The criticism wasn’t limited to the original Pokémon game. Some downloadable content, like Mega Scovillain, felt too much like the base game, and the Mega Raichu were seen as simple Pikachu copies. Even some of the initial Mega Evolutions weren’t well-received; fans found Mega Audino’s design uninspired, and many disliked how Mega Glalie looked, with its awkward jaw and beard-like growth. These designs simply weren’t popular with players.
Gen 6’s and Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Evolutions Are Not All Bad
Despite some changes over the years, many fans still love the Mega Evolutions introduced in Generation 6 and Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Mega Charizard X, with its unique color scheme and sideways flames, and Mega Gardevoir’s elegant design, were instant hits. Mega Froslass from Pokemon Legends: Z-A is a current favorite, but Mega Greninja and Mega Baxcalibur also consistently rank among the best designs. Of course, everyone has different tastes, and that’s what makes Pokemon designs so special – there’s a Pokemon for everyone.
