Kyogre is a Legendary Pokémon from the Hoenn region featured in Pokémon Legends Z-A with the Mega Dimension DLC, but obtaining it is challenging. The difficulty isn’t in catching it, but in defeating it – and first, you’ll need to make a special Donut to unlock its Mega Arena.
Don’t worry, this guide has everything you need to know about Kyogre in Legends Z-A. We’ll cover how to make the Alpha Old-Fashioned Donut, Kyogre’s stats, the best EV and nature choices, strategies for defeating Primal Kyogre, and other helpful details. Let’s begin by finding out where Kyogre appears.
This guide reveals major story details from the Pokémon Legends Z-A Mega Dimension DLC. Be warned – spoilers ahead!
Where To Find Kyogre in Pokemon Legends Z-A Mega Dimension DLC

This Legendary Pokémon is only available in the Mega Dimension DLC. To unlock the battle, players must complete the main story of Pokémon Legends Z-A, including all main missions in both the game and the DLC.
As a Pokémon fan, I was so hyped to find out you can battle Kyogre in the Alpha Sapphire Mega Arena after you finish the main story! You have to beat it to trigger a special Distortion event in Lumiose City – it’s how you get a chance to catch this legendary Pokémon. It’s a pretty awesome post-game challenge!
Once you finish the main story, Corbeau will call with some news: he’s started to understand the Distortions and how to bring out the Legendary Pokémon Ansha is searching for. Before that happens, you’ll need to get the Hoenian Salt from Grisham and deliver it to Ansha at Hotel Z.
Corbeau will be showing players how to make both the Alpha and Omega Old-Fashioned Donuts. Importantly, you’ll need the Alpha Old-Fashioned Donut recipe to continue your quest to catch Kyogre. Let’s dive right into the crafting instructions!
Alpha Old-Fashioned Donut Recipe in Pokemon Legends Z-A Mega Dimension DLC
To start making the Alpha Old-Fashioned Donut, tell Ansha “I’d like to try that Alpha Recipe.” You’ll need at least 50 points in sweetness, 50 in spice, 210 in sourness, 180 in bitterness, and 370 in freshness. There are many ways to reach these levels, but here are some of the simpler options, considering how difficult Hyperspace Berries can be to find.

Okay, so once you finally make that special donut, the real adventure begins! You have to find the Hyperspace Mega Arena to battle Kyogre – it’s going to be an amazing, super tough fight, I can’t wait!
How to Beat Kyogre & Primal Kyogre in Pokemon Legends Z-A Mega Dimension DLC
To find Kyogre’s Mega Arena, players should search for a 5-Star Distortion that says ‘Sapphire power of beginnings detected!’ You can find this distortion in the Bleu Sector 2 underpass. To get there, you’ll need to destroy the Sludge using a Water-type attack.
The Sludge is likely already gone, so head down and follow the tunnel path to find Korrine, who’s prepared to help.
After speaking with her, the Distortion will open. Choose the Alpha Old-Fashioned Donut to boost Hoopa’s power and raise your Pokémon’s level by 100. A short cutscene will play, then approach the Kyogre Statue to start the battle. Here’s a breakdown of both phases of this challenging fight:
- Phase 1 – Kyogre: The Legendary Pokemon Ruler of the Seas has a lot of power, and will use empowered versions of Waterfall, Surf, Scald, Hydro Pump, Sheer Cold, and Origin Pulse. Players need to be extremely careful not to bring any Pokemon weak to Ice or Water-type moves, or they will have to reset the fight several times. Watch out for Sheer Cold, as it automatically freezes any Pokemon near Kyogre, and Scald, as its a fast use move that it can spam and it will most likely target the trainer to make it blackout.
- Phase 2 – Primal Kyogre: Once defeated, Kyogre undergoes Primal Regression, turning into Primal Kyogre and gaining a brutal amount of Sp. Def, Sp. Atk, and Atk. It becomes more aggressive, and it will use Scald as a laser, and what’s worse, it will start spinning around, shooting beams of hot water all around. This is the phase where most players might fail, as it is nearly impossible to dodge them all. Just be careful not to remain standing in the same place, and keep Pokemon inside their Poke-Balls once it starts spinning.
The best way to win this fight is to quickly lower Kyogre’s health. This is important because Donuts give you boosts, but they also have a calorie limit. If your calories reach zero, you lose the game!
Mega Raichu Y, a recent addition in Pokemon Legends Z-A, is the perfect Pokemon to use against Kyogre and Primal Kyogre. If you’ve been training this Pokemon, now’s the time to put it to the test!
Give Raichu the item Raichuite Y, and teach it the moves Nasty Plot, Charge, Thunder, and either Electroweb or Thunderbolt. To defeat Kyogre quickly, use Nasty Plot three times, followed by Charge and then Thunder – this should take it down in just a couple of hits. Use Electroweb or Thunderbolt when switching Pokémon. Electroweb will temporarily reduce Kyogre’s speed, making it easier to land a powerful Thunder attack.
When Kyogre is defeated, it will transform into Primal Kyogre, so be ready for a tough battle. Keep Mega Raichu Y (or Mega Manectric, or Mega Swampert) in its Poke Ball while Primal Kyogre moves to the center of the arena. Then, dodge to the left to avoid the damage from Kyogre’s spinning attack.
Use the same approach as before, but be prepared for Kyogre to frequently use Surf and Scald. After defeating Primal Kyogre, you’ll be able to catch it. Finally, you need to obtain the Blue Orb to allow it to revert to its Primal form.
Best EV Spread, Nature, and Moveset for Kyogre (Primal Kyogre) in Pokemon Legends Z-A
Primal Kyogre is the most powerful Water-type Pokémon in the game. Its impressive stats (a base stat total of 770) allow it to quickly defeat entire teams of opponents with a strong combination of Waterfall and Surf attacks.
For a really powerful, all-out attack strategy, teach your Pokémon the moves Waterfall, Surf, Sheer Cold, and Origin Pulse. Maximize its Special Attack and Speed by using an EV spread of 252 in each of those stats, with the remaining 4 points in HP. A Timid nature is best, as it will further boost your Pokémon’s Speed, helping it attack first and sweep opponents.
To create a well-rounded Kyogre, especially for dealing high damage, consider these moves: Ice Beam, Hydro Pump, Scald, and Muddy Water. A good stat distribution is 252 Special Attack, 252 HP, and 4 Speed – this boosts its survivability and prevents it from being instantly defeated by strong attackers like Mega Raichu. The Modest nature is best for this build, as it further increases Kyogre’s Special Attack power.
