Pokémon Legends: Z-A Needs Online PvP for Its Battle Royale

Summary

  • Pokemon Legends: Z-A features a battle royale tournament at night, elevating the game’s day-and-night cycle.
  • The introduction of online PvP would enhance the player experience and offer unique rewards within Lumiose City at night.
  • The game’s dynamic battling system presents an opportunity for a new PvP battle royale mode, akin to Elden Ring Nightreign.

In today’s Nintendo Direct event, held before the April 2nd broadcast focusing on the Switch’s upcoming successor, a fresh trailer for “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” was unveiled, offering glimpses of returning creatures and novel aspects. The trailer predominantly featured exploration and Mega Evolutions, demonstrating how players can traverse the rooftops of Lumiose City. However, an intriguing detail emerged about “Pokemon Legends: Z-A”: there appears to be some mysterious activity happening at night. This was hinted at in the previous trailer, with the Rotom Phone illuminating during the dark hours, suggesting that nocturnal events will unfold in “Pokemon Legends: Z-A”. It seems that this game may include a tournament or trainer battles when the sun sets.

The concept behind Pokemon Legends: Z-A is intriguingly different from the day-night cycles in some classic Pokemon games and even sets it apart from Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which primarily focused on a limited number of trainer battles. In contrast, Pokemon Legends: Z-A introduces tournament battles, where players progress from Z to A rank, engaging in combat with other trainers, much like a battle royale scenario. This innovative take on the Pokemon series is almost perfect, but still lacks one key feature to truly stand out.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Battle Royale Tournament Needs Online PvP

In “Pokemon Legends: Z-A”, Mega Evolutions will add excitement to every fight, making gameplay more engaging. Aiming for Rank A, which grants access to exclusive night tournament rewards, further intensifies this experience. Given the game’s focus on combat, it seems logical to incorporate an online feature that complements the battle royale tournament. This would allow players to appear in Lumiose City at night and challenge other trainers in one-on-one duels. The unique aspect is that these opponents wouldn’t be AI, but real players instead.

In this scenario, we’d transform it into an authentic player versus player tournament, with Lumiose City from Pokemon Legends: Z-A serving as the battlefield for the free-for-all competition. An online ranking system could be incorporated here, ranging from Z to A, acknowledging players based on their performance and providing them with in-game rewards or currency. While player versus player battles are not unheard of in Pokemon games, the primary format for VGC is double battles featuring predefined fields and turn-based, stationary combat. However, Pokemon Legends: Z-A already deviates significantly from this formula, so engaging in online player battles would be a unique twist to the series.

How Legends: Z-A Could Be The Elden Ring Nightreign of Pokemon Games

In Legends: Z-A, players can now dodge attacks – a feature that was absent in previous series, even in PLA. The new dynamic battling system introduces exciting possibilities and one of them is incorporating this mechanic into player versus player (PvP) battles instead of just fighting against AI trainers. To make the game more thrilling, it could borrow an idea from Elden Ring Nightreign‘s battle royale style, where the map in Lumiose City gradually shrinks over time until only one player remains standing, earning rank-up points and rewards.

PLZA Going Multiplayer Would Kill Two Birds With One Stone

Introducing the new battling system in Player vs Player (PvP) would serve a dual purpose: not only would players get to test it out, but also Pokemon’s debut into Battle Royale. While other games like PLZA offer trainer battles, PvP battles in the context of Pokemon would be something entirely new. The upcoming game, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, differs significantly from PLZA, and its emphasis on battles could make it a true sequel. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet if PLZA will support online features, but PLA did, to some extent. This leaves room for the possibility of a full-fledged PvP Battle Royale mode in the game, although fans will have to stay tuned for confirmation.
