The new game, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, is out now, and it features 26 brand-new Mega Evolutions for players to discover. While each one is unique and players might pick favorites based on appearance, some Mega Evolutions are more powerful or useful than others during gameplay.
In *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, choosing your starter Pokemon is even more important because each one gains a new Mega Evolution. While some of these Mega Evolutions are powerful and well-rounded, others aren’t very strong.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A won’t feature the Mega Evolutions of the Gen 6 starter Pokemon (Greninja, Delphox, and Chesnaught). This is because these Mega Evolutions require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and are primarily intended for competitive play, and aren’t currently accessible in the game. They will be rolled out over time, starting with Greninja in Season 1, followed by Delphox in Season 2, and Chesnaught in Season 3.
S-Tier Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
- Mega Chandelure
- Mega Skarmory
- Mega Starmie
- Mega Zygarde
Many fans are surprised to find that Mega Starmie could be the strongest Mega Evolution in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*. It becomes available relatively early in the game and boasts impressive stats and a wide range of moves. With a base stat total of 660 – the third-highest of all the new Mega Evolutions – Starmie is a versatile and incredibly fast attacker.
Chandelure is a powerful Pokémon with an exceptional Special Attack stat of 175. Its overall stats are also strong at 620, giving it solid defenses and speed. Combining this with its strong moves and diverse attack options, Mega Chandelure is one of the most formidable Mega Evolutions in the game.
Despite having a base stat total of 565, Mega Skarmory is remarkably well-rounded. It boasts a strong 140 Attack stat, high defenses, and good Speed, alongside a decent 40 Special Attack. Its Steel/Flying typing provides excellent defenses, and with powerful moves like Brave Bird and Iron Head, it can be a formidable offensive threat.

Zygarde in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* is already a powerful Pokemon, but its Mega Evolution makes it even more impressive. It boasts an incredible 216 Special Attack stat and introduces a brand-new move called Nihil Light. This move deals huge damage, no matter how the opponent tries to boost or lower their stats, and it’s super effective against Fairy-type Pokemon.
A-Tier Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
- Mega Barbaracle
- Mega Emboar
- Mega Excadrill
- Mega Falinks
- Mega Feraligatr
- Mega Floette
- Mega Hawlucha
- Mega Scrafty
Barbaracle stands out in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* because its Mega Evolution changes its type – it drops Water and gains Fighting. It boasts incredibly high Attack and Defense, making it very durable, and has respectable Speed. With a wide range of powerful attacks, both of its new type and others, Mega Barbaracle is a fantastic addition to any team.
Mega Emboar in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* isn’t a standout Pokemon, but it’s definitely powerful. Its Attack stat is very high, reaching 148, although its base Attack of 123 doesn’t see a huge increase. Still, it boasts solid overall stats, strong moves that benefit from its type, and can withstand attacks from several common types.
Mega Excadrill is a powerful Pokémon with incredibly high Attack – a whopping 165! It also boasts solid HP, defenses, and Speed. With access to strong Ground-type moves and a good variety of Steel-type attacks, it’s a fantastic choice for any team, particularly because of its many resistances.
Falinks, a Pokémon introduced in *Sword and Shield*, is unique in its generation and has recently received a Mega Evolution. Similar to Emboar, it boasts high Attack and Defense stats, along with a solid Speed of 100. Though its attacks primarily deal Fighting-type damage, Falinks can learn a wide variety of moves that cover its weaknesses, making it a versatile opponent.
Mega Feraligatr in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* doesn’t significantly improve its defense or offense with its Water/Dragon typing, but it boasts an incredibly high Attack stat of 160 and has access to powerful moves. While its design has divided opinions, it’s considered one of the strongest Mega Evolutions in the game, though it’s limited by its low HP and Speed.
Eternal Flower Floette is unique – its base stats are only slightly lower than Florges, but its Mega Evolution gives it a significant power boost. It excels in Special Attack and Special Defense, though it doesn’t have a wide variety of effective moves. Still, as a Fairy-type Pokémon, it’s a powerful opponent.

Hawlucha was revealed as one of the Mega Evolutions coming to the game. Although Hawlucha itself isn’t particularly strong, its Mega Evolution boasts excellent stats, a solid movepool, and good coverage, making it a powerful Fighting and Flying-type Pokémon.
The recent Pokémon Legends: Z-A trailer heavily hinted at Mega Scrafty being a key Pokémon for the character Naveen, and the official reveal lives up to the hype. Boasting impressive stats – 135 Defense and Special Defense, and 130 Attack – Mega Scrafty can be a fantastic addition to any team. Its versatile movepool, including the move Bulk Up which boosts stats, makes it even more valuable.
B-Tier Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
- Mega Clefable
- Mega Dragonite
- Mega Dragalge
- Mega Drampa
- Mega Eelektross
- Mega Froslass
- Mega Pyroar
- Mega Victreebel
Mega Clefable’s new Fairy/Flying typing in PLZA is a neat idea, opening up some possibilities for both attacking and defending. However, it doesn’t quite live up to its potential. While it’s immune to Dragon and Ground attacks and has solid defenses, it lacks a diverse movepool and relies heavily on Air Slash as its main Flying-type attack, making it only an okay Mega Evolution overall.
Okay, so I’ve been checking out Mega Dragonite in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, and honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. It’s super strong with a base stat total of 700, but compared to the original Dragonite, I think it’s actually a slight step down. They traded some of its physical Attack for a boost in Special Attack, which is… weird. And its movepool is all over the place, so it’s just okay when you stack it up against other Mega Evolutions. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, but not amazing.
Mega Dragalge in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* has a strange design – it looks like a Ghost-type Pokemon, but it’s still Poison and Dragon. While it boasts incredibly high Special Defense, along with good Defense and Special Attack, its low Speed of just 44 severely holds it back. In a game where being fast reduces move cooldowns, Mega Dragalge struggles to be effective.

Drampa faces a challenge similar to Dragalge: it boasts a powerful Special Attack of 160 and decent bulk, but its Speed is very low at just 36. This slow speed could make battles in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* difficult, ultimately making Mega Drampa a fairly average choice.
Okay, so Eelektross is finally getting a Mega Evolution, which is awesome! On paper, its stats look really good – it can be a solid attacker. But there’s a catch. With the changes in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, they’re cutting abilities, and that means Mega Eelektross loses Levitate and its immunity to Ground-type moves, which is a big downside. It can learn some good moves, but honestly, its bulk is just okay, so it’s not going to be one of the top-tier Mega Evolutions, unfortunately.
In *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, Froslass is the only newly introduced Ice-type Mega Evolution. While Ice isn’t a particularly strong type overall, Froslass boasts a high Special Attack and a Speed stat of 120. However, it’s not very durable, as it’s weak to three of the most common attack types in the game.
Despite having impressive speed – one of the highest in the game at 126 – Mega Pyroar in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* isn’t very effective overall. It struggles because it doesn’t have a strong enough variety of moves to be a truly competitive choice in battle.

Mega Victreebel boasts a really cool design, and its stats are decent. However, it struggles to be a top threat because Grass and Poison types aren’t known for strong attacks, and its average speed holds it back. Being both a physical and special attacker doesn’t help its performance either.
C-Tier Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
- Mega Malamar
- Mega Meganium
- Mega Scolipede
Despite its quirky marketing campaign featuring “My friend Malamar,” Mega Malamar isn’t a particularly strong Pokémon. Its stats are only slightly above average across the board, and while it’s meant to be a mixed attacker, both its Attack and Special Attack are relatively low, making it underwhelming offensively.

Despite promising potential, the Mega Meganium in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* doesn’t quite live up to expectations. While it boasts impressive stats and gains the beneficial Fairy type, its limited movepool holds it back. With few effective Grass or Fairy attacks, and a significant weakness to Poison, Mega Meganium ultimately falls short of being a truly powerful Pokémon.
Mega Scolipede is a curious transformation, similar to what happened with Mega Dragonite. While it trades its original speed for increased attack and defense, the result isn’t very effective. With mediocre special defense, low HP, and a significantly reduced speed, Mega Scolipede struggles to perform well in battle.
