Recent polls show why the Pokémon franchise keeps featuring Charizard. The latest game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, has fans thrilled with both familiar Pokémon and new evolutions. It brings back Mega Evolutions – a popular feature not seen since Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee – and takes players back to Lumiose City in the Kalos region. The game also highlights many Pokémon that fans already love.
Since its introduction in the 1990s, Charizard has become one of the most popular Pokémon. Its iconic status as one of the original starter Pokémon has made it a mainstay throughout the entire series. The original Base Set Charizard card is incredibly valuable, and Charizard consistently receives new forms and abilities – like Mega Evolution and Dynamax – often showcasing the latest gameplay features. A recent poll now reveals why Pokémon continues to focus so much attention on this fan-favorite.
Pokemon Survey Shows Charizard’s Overwhelming Popularity in Japan
A recent Pokémon popularity poll in Japan reveals just how beloved Charizard is. It topped the charts for both its original form and its Mega Evolution in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, significantly outpacing all other Pokémon. Charizard received over 40 more votes than Lucario, who came in second for base forms, and a whopping 100 more votes than Chandelure in fourth place. In the Mega Evolution poll, Mega Charizard also led by a large margin—40 votes ahead of Mega Starmie, the second-place finisher—making it the second-biggest gap between any two Pokémon.
Charizard is consistently one of the most popular Pokémon, and The Pokémon Company often highlights it in their products. The newest Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion, Phantasmal Flames, features Charizard on the cover, and a special Charizard card is highly sought after by collectors. Its popularity is so great that a newly discovered bee species, named “chilicola charizard” due to its orange coloring, was named after the Pokémon! Charizard also appears in many spin-off games, like Pokémon Unite and the Pokken Tournament fighting series.
Pokemon Has Innovated and Evolved its Formula in Recent Games
The Pokemon series has been evolving its classic RPG style in recent games. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet were the first to let players tackle Gyms, Titan Pokemon, and Team Star in any order they choose, offering a truly open experience. More recently, Legends: Z-A dramatically changed battles, introducing real-time combat for the first time in the series’ nearly 30-year history. Leaks and rumors suggest that the next Pokemon games may bring even more significant changes and innovations.
Although The Pokemon Company hasn’t officially announced anything about the next generation of Pokemon games, rumors are already circulating. Leaks suggest the upcoming games, currently called Pokemon Wind and Wave, will be set in a Southeast Asian-inspired tropical island region. The Pokemon franchise will also be celebrating its 30th anniversary in early 2026, and we’ll likely learn more about the new games during the annual Pokemon Day celebrations. As the Pokemon world continues to grow, Charizard is expected to remain one of the most popular Pokemon.
