Pokémon Legends: Z-A Preload Guide & File Size Revealed

The amount of storage space Pokémon Legends: Z-A will need has been revealed before its launch next week, and thankfully, it won’t require a huge download – like most games on Nintendo Switch.

Okay, so Pokémon Legends: Z-A is going to be huge! It’s the first Pokémon game coming to the new Switch 2, which is awesome, but the cool thing is it’s also coming out on the original Switch we all have. We can play it on either console starting October 16th – I’ve already marked my calendar!

The new Switch 2 doesn’t come with any previously announced extras or new games, but its system files take up nearly twice as much storage space as the original console.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Nearly Twice as Big on Switch 2

As of October 8th, you can now preload Pokémon Legends: Z-A on Nintendo Switch, and the file size has been confirmed for both the original Switch and the Switch OLED model.

The game needs 4.0 GB of storage space on the original console, but 7.7 GB on the Switch 2 – that’s nearly double the amount.

The new game takes up less space on your Switch than previous installments. While games like Scarlet & Violet (6.8 GB), Legends: Arceus (6.1 GB), and Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl (6.9 GB) are all around the same size, they’re significantly smaller than Sword and Shield, which required 12.4 GB of storage.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A for the original Switch has the smallest file size of any core Pokémon game released since Pokémon Sun and Moon on the Nintendo 3DS.

The game’s smaller file size is likely because Legends: Z-A is limited to Lumiose City instead of a whole region. However, the new battle features could have actually made the file larger.

Good news for Pokémon Legends: Z-A players on both platforms! You likely won’t need to delete other games to make space for it, as there should be plenty of room.
