Despite the title, Pokemon Legends: Z-A is a direct sequel to Pokemon X and Y, a connection it shares with only a handful of other core Pokemon games, such as Black 2 and White 2. The game is set five years after the events of Pokemon X and Y and brings back many familiar and popular characters who are central to the new storyline.
It’s wonderful to reconnect with characters like Emma and AZ after all this time, especially for those who love the Kalos region. But Pokemon Legends: Z-A also has some surprising new details connected to the story of Pokemon X and Y. From learning what happened to other familiar faces to uncovering the mysteries of Lumiose City, here are the biggest revelations about the Kalos region from Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
AZ Is Back
This 3000-Year-Old Legend Is Now Running His Own Hotel

AZ is a truly captivating character in Pokémon X and Y. He’s an immortal who lived 3000 years ago and was once the King of Kalos. He created the powerful Ultimate Weapon that Lysandre attempted to use at the end of the game. Many Pokémon fans also remember the touching scene where AZ is finally reunited with his Floette, his Eternal Flower.
The new game, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, surprisingly shows that AZ, a character from older games, is still alive and central to the story. He now runs Hotel Z and mentors Team MZ, living with his Pokémon, Floette. While it’s heartwarming to see him seemingly at peace after the events of X and Y, the game hints that he’s keeping secrets and will likely have a crucial role to play in the unfolding narrative of Legends: Z-A.
The New Pokemon Professor
Sycamore Was Replaced By Mable, Of Team Flare Fame

Professor Augustine Sycamore is the Pokémon Professor for the Kalos region, specializing in Mega Evolution. He gives new trainers a starter Pokémon from the Kanto region in the games Pokémon X and Y. While his lab is in Lumiose City and many players want to meet him, they’ll discover that someone else is working there now.
That’s right – Mable, a former scientist from Team Flare, is now the director of the Pokemon Research Lab, taking over from Professor Sycamore. She explains she took the job as part of an agreement to avoid jail time after the incidents in the X and Y games. Throughout Legends: Z-A, Sycamore is missing, but photos of him are displayed in the lab. An NPC also mentions that Sycamore is currently working with Trevor, a rival from a previous game, on research in a different region.
Emma Has Grown Up And Is Following In Looker’s Footsteps
She’s The New Lead Detective Of Looker Bureau

Many players of Pokémon X and Y might not have discovered Emma, as she appears in a side quest that’s easy to overlook. She was a young orphan living on the streets of Lumiose City, and Team Flare’s Xerosic took advantage of her. Fortunately, with the player’s help, Looker rescued her and took her in, allowing her to live and work with him at the Looker Bureau.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A is set five years after the stories of X and Y, making Emma twenty-one years old. She’s now a trained detective and has transformed the Looker Bureau into her personal office – a welcome development considering her past experiences. Looker himself doesn’t appear in Legends: Z-A (though Emma keeps a photo of him on her desk), but longtime Pokemon fans know he’s moved to the Alola region, where he’s working with Anabel.
Lysandre Is Alive
The Main Villain Of Pokemon X And Y Has Taken On A New Identity

Look, some Pokémon villains really stick with you, but others? Totally forgettable. For a long time, Lysandre from Pokémon X and Y was in that second group for me. He looked cool, sure, but honestly, his reasons for doing what he did, his actions, and even his personality just felt…basic, especially when you compare him to other Pokémon baddies. If I’m being real, most of us only remember that he got, well, seemingly destroyed by his own Ultimate Weapon at the end of X and Y.
In the game Legends: Z-A, players encounter a puzzling man with amnesia who calls himself L. It turns out he’s Lysandre, the villain from Pokémon X and Y, and he somehow survived the events of those games thanks to Zygarde. Now, he’s completely changed his ways and is working to help the legendary Pokémon. This redemption story for Lysandre is a surprising and well-done addition, giving a surprisingly complex backstory to a character who was once fairly unremarkable.
Team Flare Still Exists
The Sudden Rise Of Team Flare Nouveau

Team Flare, much like its leader Lysandre, was often considered one of the most unremarkable villainous teams in the Pokémon series. However, the new game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, sheds light on the organization’s history, how much power it held, and what happened to some of its members after their defeat.
Team Flare started as a charitable organization that genuinely helped people, including someone named Corbeau. However, Lysandre’s obsession with legendary Pokémon and a dangerous weapon caused the group to become corrupted. After the events of the X and Y games, Grisham, Griselle, and other young members formed a new, secret branch called Team Flare Nouveau. They aim to restore the organization’s original good intentions and repair its damaged image. Despite appearing tough, Team Flare Nouveau isn’t inherently malicious and even assists the player at times, which is a surprisingly thoughtful twist to the story.
Clemont And Bonnie Left Prism Tower
Lumiose City’s Resident Gym Leader Was Forced To Leave His Gym

Clemont is the Gym Leader specializing in Electric-type Pokémon in Lumiose City, and his gym is located in the iconic Prism Tower. But many Pokémon fans probably know him best as one of Ash Ketchum’s traveling companions, alongside his sister Bonnie, in the Pokémon the Series: XY anime. When Pokémon Legends: Z-A was announced as taking place entirely in Lumiose City, people expected Clemont and Bonnie to appear in the game, but unfortunately, they didn’t.
Quasartico Inc. has closed Prism Tower for renovations, forcing Clemont and Bonnie to find a new home. Locals remember Clemont, a talented inventor, and his sister fondly, recalling the fun quizzes and Pokémon battles they used to host inside the tower. Fans are hoping Clemont and Bonnie will be featured in the upcoming Mega Dimension downloadable content.
Diantha Is Focusing On Her Acting Career
The Champion Doesn’t Seem To Care About Battles Anymore

I’m so hyped for Pokemon Legends: Z-A! It sounds like AZ and Team MZ are on the hunt for the ultimate Mega Evolution master, someone who could potentially deal with whatever’s going on in Prism Tower. Obviously, we’re supposed to be that trainer, but it got me thinking… what about Diantha? She’s the Kalos Champion, super strong, and has that amazing Mega Gardevoir. It just feels weird she wasn’t around to help Lumiose City when things started going wrong, you know?
Diantha is both the Pokemon Champion and a famous actress. You can see posters for her new movie all over town, and one character even points out she’s prioritizing her acting career. This likely explains why she’s not currently fulfilling her duties as Champion. Despite this, she’s a well-loved character, and many fans are hoping she’ll return in a future Pokemon game or the upcoming Legends: Z-A expansion.
There’s Another Ancient Weapon Inside Prism Tower
The Ultimate Weapon Wasn’t Enough For AZ, So He Created Ange

Prism Tower is the largest and most famous building in Lumiose City, but players can’t go inside. This is due to renovations announced by Quasartico Inc., but also because a strange energy within the tower is causing Pokémon all over the city to unexpectedly Mega Evolve. The mystery is solved in the final part of Legends: Z-A, where it’s revealed that two thousand years ago, AZ built another powerful weapon called Ange and hid it inside Prism Tower.
Ange is a truly unforgettable final boss in the world of Pokémon, featuring an epic battle where the player teams up with powerful allies like Zygarde, Taunie/Urban, and Eternal Flower Floette. This massive, machine-like creature is responsible for widespread destruction. Ange’s very existence is central to the story of Legends: Z-A, which adds a surprising layer to the game. Sadly, AZ, the character connected to Ange, passes away soon after the battle, making it a rare instance of a human character dying within a Pokémon storyline – players even visit his grave after the game’s ending.
