In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Side Mission 186, called “The Ultimate Techniques in Mega Dimension,” players face three difficult challenges. Each challenge requires using only the final evolved form of one of the starter Pokémon – Meganium, Emboar, or Feraligatr – to defeat three fully evolved Pokémon of a type that’s strong against it, one after another.

You’ll face three powerful Pokémon in each challenge, and they’ll usually be at a very high level with a type advantage. This guide will walk you through winning strategies and the best team setups for every trial, helping you easily come out on top.

How to Start The Ultimate Techniques

  • How to Unlock: Side Mission 186 The Ultimate Techniques becomes available in Hyperspace Mission 12: The Greatest Gift, after players visit the Rust Syndicate.

Begin the side mission ‘The Ultimate Techniques’ by speaking with Arcannes, who is located near Cafe Bataille. She will then present you with three challenges: The Trial of Grass, The Trial of Fire, and The Trial of Water.

Before starting a trial, put all your Pokémon in your storage box except the one you’ll be using for the trial. For the Grass Trial, you’ll need Meganium; for the Fire Trial, Emboar; and for the Water Trial, Feraligatr.

The Trial of Grass (Meganium)

Meganium Build

Level 100 Held Item: Meganiumite Nature: Modest

Light Screen Learns move at level 50.
Synthesis Learns move at level 40.
Ancient Power TM 120 Ancient Power can be purchased for 360 Mega Shards from Secret TM Vendor.
Earth Power TM 52 Earth Power can be found on the rooftop in Juane Sector 7, just south of . Can only be accessed after completing Side Mission 80: A Shocking Territorial Dispute (unlocks after reaching Rank C) to unlock the Holovator nearby.

Start by Mega Evolving your Pokémon right away at the beginning of the battle, and then immediately use Light Screen. Light Screen significantly boosts Meganium’s Special Defense, reducing damage from special attacks. This is especially helpful against Charizard and Delphox, who primarily use special attacks, and Blaziken, who uses a mix of both types of attacks.

Even though Mega Meganium is powerful, it’s still vulnerable to Fire-type attacks. Because of this, you’ll need to use items like Max Potion and Full Restore during battles to stay healthy. If those items are temporarily unavailable, use the move Synthesis to heal and finish the fight.

The Trial of Grass Pokemon How to Beat
Ancient Power should make quick work of Charizard thanks to its 4x weakness to Rock-type moves. Earth Power is ineffective because Charizard is Flying-type.
Rely on Earth Power to deal massive damage, then follow it up with Ancient Power if the Pokemon is still standing.
Both Earth Power and Ancient Power are super effective against Delphox.

If you win against Charizard, Blaziken, and Delphox using Meganium in the Trial of Grass, you’ll get TM 160, Frenzy Plant.

​The Trial of Fire (Emboar)

Level 100 Held Item: Emboarite Nature: Adamant

Solar Blade TM 152 Solar Blade can be purchased for 540 Mega Shards from Secret TM Vendor.
Trailblaze TM 115 Trailblaze can be purchased for 360 Mega Shards from Secret TM Vendor.
Drain Punch TM 131 Drain Punch can be purchased for 420 Mega Shards from Secret TM Vendor.
Thunder Punch TM 23 Thunder Punch is a reward for reaching Level 15 in Mable’s Research.

Mega Emboar is a powerful physical attacker, and its Mega Evolution is key to quickly defeating the Water-type Pokémon it will face. Because Emboar can learn strong moves that are particularly effective against Water-types – like Thunder Punch and Solar Blade – this battle focuses on dealing a lot of damage.

Solar Blade is technically Emboar’s strongest attack, and all three Pokémon you’ll face in this trial are vulnerable to it. However, the attack takes a while to execute, so it might not always land. Trailblaze is a good backup plan to exploit any weaknesses the enemy Pokémon have to Grass-type moves.

The Trial of Fire Pokemon How to Beat
Solar Blade, Trailblaze, and Thunder Punch are all 2x effective against Blastoise.
Solar Blade should be able to easily OHKO Swampert due to its debilitating Grass-type weakness. Follow it up with Trailblaze if it somehow survives.
Use Drain Punch to recover health and deal massive STAB damage, then use Thunder Punch or Trailblaze to take out Greninja if it still remains standing.

If you beat Blastoise, Swampert, and Greninja with Emboar in the Trial of Fire, you’ll get TM 158, Blast Burn.

The Trial of Water (Feraligatr)

Feraligatr Build

Level 100 Held Item: Feraligite Nature: Adamant

Ice Fang TM 15 Ice Fang is a reward for reaching Level 7 in Mable’s Research.
Icicle Spear TM 149 Icicle Spear can be purchased for 420 Mega Shards from Secret TM Vendor.
Protect TM 17 Protect is a reward for reaching Level 4 in Mable’s Research.
Breaking Swipe Learns move at level 26

The Water Trial is generally the simplest of the trials, thanks to Feraligatr’s ability to Mega Evolve. When Feraligatr Mega Evolves, it becomes a Water and Dragon-type Pokemon, which eliminates its double weakness to Grass-type attacks. This Water/Dragon combination is a strong defensive typing, leaving Mega Feraligatr only vulnerable to Dragon and Fairy-type moves.

All three Pokémon you’ll face in this challenge are vulnerable to Ice-type attacks, making moves like Ice Fang and Icicle Spear particularly effective. Protect is a good move to have as a safety net, and Breaking Swipe is a quick, powerful attack that can finish off weakened opponents.

The Trial of Water Pokemon How to Beat
Use Ice Fang, followed by Icicle Spear. If it remains alive, Breaking Swipe. Protect if it still doesn’t go down.
Use Ice Fang, followed by Icicle Spear.
Use Ice Fang, followed by Icicle Spear.

Okay, so I just beat Venusaur, Sceptile, and Chesnaught with my Feraligatr in the Water Trial, and as a reward, I got TM 159 – Hydro Cannon! Pretty sweet move to learn.

If you successfully finish all three parts of Side Mission 186: The Ultimate Techniques, you’ll complete the mission and earn 10,000 Poke Dollars.
