In *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, players will encounter Alpha Pokemon, which are larger and more powerful versions of standard Pokemon. This feature returns from *Legends: Arceus*, but with some new changes.
This guide explains what makes Alpha Pokémon unique compared to regular Pokémon, and where to locate them in Lumiose City. Here’s a summary of the key details.
What are Alpha Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A?
How Do Alpha Pokemon Work?
Alpha Pokemon have the following characteristics:
- They have red glowing eyes that are immediately visible from a distance.
- They are 10-20 levels higher than Pokemon around them.
- They have significantly higher HP compared to any other Pokemon of their level when they are fought in the wild.
- They are highly aggressive and attack the trainer at every opportunity.
- They know at least one move their species typically only learns using a TM.
- They have three random perfect IVs (31) and maximum HP EVs (252).
- They can be caught in a Poke Ball like regular Pokemon.
- They have a red skull icon in their status window.
Once you catch an Alpha Pokémon, the red glow in its eyes disappears, and its HP resets to a standard amount.
Alpha Pokemon can be shiny in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
Where to Find Alpha Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
Alpha Pokemon Locations

After you finish the “A Big Ol’ Bunnelby” quest – which is part of the main story and can’t be skipped – special, powerful Pokémon called Alpha Pokémon will begin appearing in the wild areas and throughout Lumiose City.
After you beat the Alpha Bunnelby, you’ll notice that some of the regular Pokémon in each Wild Zone have turned into Alpha Pokémon. Each Wild Zone always has at least one or two Alpha Pokémon that appear in the same spot – for example, Staryu in Wild Zone 2. Besides these fixed spawns, other Pokémon in the area have a small chance of becoming Alpha Pokémon. You can also find Alpha Pokémon in specific locations outside of the Wild Zones.
Guaranteed Alpha Pokemon respawn after a period of time.
