Pokemon Legends: Z-A – Xerneas & Yveltal’s Mega Evolution Secret Unveiled!

Following a span of about 12 years with minimal attention post the launch of Pokemon X and Y, the legendary Pokemon Zygarde is set to shine once more in the upcoming game titled Pokemon Legends: Z-A. This game, happening after the events of Pokemon X and Y, will place players as a young traveler exploring the revamped Lumiose City. As they do so, they’ll engage in trainer battles during the Z-A Royale and meet both fresh and familiar faces in Kalos.

Throughout their journey, players will also come across Zygarde in its various forms, as this Order Pokemon seems particularly drawn to the protagonist. While Zygarde is prominently showcased in Z-A, it’s essential for Game Freak not to overlook featuring the other two legendary Pokemon of Kalos: Xerneas and Yveltal, as well.

The History of Xerneas and Yveltal Explained

Back in early 2013, during a Pokemon Direct broadcast, two new legendary Pokemon – Xerneas, the Life Pokemon, and Yveltal, the Destruction Pokemon – were unveiled alongside the starters Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie as the first official introductions. Yveltal was introduced as a dual Dark/Flying type and was designated as the mascot for Pokemon Y, while Xerneas was presented as a Fairy-type, making it the first legendary Fairy-type in the franchise and the mascot for Pokemon X. Interestingly, these Kalos legendary Pokemon were designed to mirror the shapes of the letters ‘X’ and ‘Y’. Specifically, Xerneas has deer-like antlers and long legs that resemble an ‘X’, while Yveltal’s bird-like wings and tails mimic a ‘Y’.

Regardless of the captivating looks and types of Xerneas and Yveltal, these legendary Pokemon had minimal significance and visibility in the storyline of Pokemon X and Y. Only select characters mention them before they’re found hidden within Team Flare’s headquarters. In Anistar City, players can interact with an elderly man who explains that at the end of its thousand-year existence, Xerneas dispersed its energy to nearby creatures, while Yveltal absorbed the life force of other beings 3,000 years ago. After these events, both Pokemon entered a deep slumber; Xerneas transformed into the Tree of Life, and Yveltal became the Cocoon of Destruction. Later on, they were revived by Team Flare as part of their scheme to create a “beautiful and improved” world.

Xerneas and Yveltal’s Appearances Beyond Pokemon X and Y

In the games X and Y, once Xerneas and Yveltal are either captured or defeated by Serena or Calem, they had minimal impact on the story that followed. However, in the movie Pokemon the Movie: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction (2014), it was Yveltal who caused destruction in Allearth Forest, turning Pokemon and people into stone, while Xerneas later restored both the forest and the petrified beings. In subsequent mainline games, these two legendary Pokemon could be obtained and made a few brief appearances in spin-offs as well.

Xerneas and Yveltal’s Potential Return and Prominence in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it’s all about Zygarde, but there’s still a chance for Xerneas and Yveltal to regain their former glory. Since Xerneas last made a significant appearance in 2021’s New Pokemon Snap, and Yveltal hasn’t shone brightly since its initial release, it would be fitting for these two legendary Pokémon to reappear in a supporting role alongside Zygarde. This could be done by having them serve as secondary antagonists, much like their original intended roles within Team Flare. For example, a former member of Team Flare might be unveiled as the mastermind behind a part of Lumiose City’s redevelopment project, using his power to capture and manipulate Xerneas and Yveltal for the purpose of destroying the city in retaliation for Lysandre’s downfall.

It’s been speculated that Zygarde might get a Mega Evolution in the game “Pokemon Legends: Z-A”. If this is confirmed, it would be fair for Xerneas and Yveltal to also receive powerful forms like Mega Evolutions or something comparable. This could follow the pattern set by Rayquaza receiving a Mega Evolution in “Pokemon Omega Ruby” and “Alpha Sapphire”, while Groudon and Kyogre got Primal forms.

The introduction of these fresh Mega Evolutions or Primal forms might serve to deepen the mysterious past of Xerneas and Yveltal. These transformations could also play a crucial role in determining their potential conflict with Lumiose and Zygarde, considering that Mega Evolution seems to imply an unnatural alteration. On the other hand, Xerneas could be portrayed as leading wild Pokemon to inhabit Lumiose after its reconstruction, while Yveltal might be employed to decay Lumiose’s newly established natural elements.
