Pokemon Legends: Z-A is changing up the competitive Pokemon scene with new Mega Evolutions, and we’ll likely see the full impact when Pokemon Champions is released. While ranked battles in Z-A have been somewhat uneven, it’s not the real-time battles that are the main issue. Instead, the ability to use powerful Legendary Pokemon like Xerneas, Zygarde, and Mewtwo in ranked play has been the biggest factor. Now, with the recent Mega Dimension DLC, a new Mega Evolution has arrived that is incredibly powerful – potentially the most overpowered Pokemon ever created, and unlikely to be surpassed in Generation 10.

Mega Evolution is popular because it gives popular Pokémon new forms and makes them significantly stronger. Unlike regional forms, which simply rearrange stats without increasing overall power, Mega Evolution adds 100 points to a Pokémon’s total stats, without affecting its HP. This can create incredibly powerful Pokémon, especially those that already have high base stats. The DLC for Pokemon Legends: Z-A introduces 9 Legendary and 11 Mythical Pokemon to catch, many of which are expected to become top contenders in ranked battles. However, Mega Golisopod stands out as exceptionally strong – it might not just excel in ranked play, but potentially become one of the greatest competitive Pokemon ever, if Mega Evolutions remain a part of the series through Pokemon Champions. With its amazing stats and type advantages, Mega Golisopod could be the most impactful new Pokemon in years, extending beyond Legends: Z-A.

Mega Golisopod can be found in Hyperspace Lumiose portals that say “Mega Stone detected!”. You’ll usually find Wimpod in 1-Star Bug-type portals, while Golisopod shows up in portals ranging from 3 to 5 Stars.

Mega Golisopod is incredibly strong and durable, boasting a massive 150 Attack, 175 Defense, and 120 Special Defense. It hits hard and can take a lot of damage. Its typing also improves from Bug/Water to Bug/Steel, similar to Scizor. This change eliminates its double weaknesses to Flying, Rock, and Electric, leaving it with a single four-times weakness to Fire. It also gains more resistances – increasing from five to eight – and even picks up an immunity.

Golisopod is a great choice on both offense and defense. It’s normally effective against Fire-type Pokémon, and its Water-type attacks hit them hard. This allows you to strategically decide when to Mega Evolve Golisopod in Legends: Z-A, taking out Fire-types before evolving to maximize its impact.

As a huge Pokémon fan, I’m always impressed by Mega Golisopod. What’s really cool is that unlike some others, like Scizor, it doesn’t change types when it Mega Evolves, sticking with Bug/Water. It’s a bit strange that Mega Evolution actually removes the STAB bonus from Water-type moves, even though it keeps the same moves it could learn before. But honestly, with those incredible stats, it all adds up to make Mega Golisopod one of the strongest Pokémon – Mega Evolution or otherwise – in the whole series!

To make things even more powerful, Mega Golisopod can learn Swords Dance, a move that sharply boosts its Attack stat. It also has access to a variety of moves that allow it to hit many different types of Pokémon. If you maximize its Attack stat with EVs and give it a beneficial nature and Swords Dance, Mega Golisopod becomes a serious threat.

  • One-hit KO any Mewtwo in Pokemon Legends: Z-A if it has 252 EVs in HP, including Mega Evolutions, with First Impression, Leech Life, X-Scissor, Pin Missile, or U-Turn.
  • One-hit KO Xerneas in Pokemon Legends: Z-A with Iron Head or Gunk Shot, provided it doesn’t have more than 20 EVs in Defense with 252 EVs in HP, but still has a high chance of one-shotting Xerneas with up to 100 points in Defense and 252 in HP.
  • One-hit KO Charizard in Pokemon Legends: Z-A with Rock Slide, as well as Mega Charizard Y.
  • One-hit KO Primal Groudon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A with Liquidation, and an 85% chance to OHKO with Waterfall.

Okay, so I’ve been messing around with Mega Golisopod, and even with a pretty simple build, it’s surprisingly good. In turn-based battles, it really stands out because you don’t always need to pump up HP like crazy. Yeah, its Speed is kinda low at 40, but that’s where Trick Room comes in – it can actually let slower Pokemon like Golisopod move first! Honestly, I think Mega Golisopod is one of the best Pokemon they’ve ever designed, and the next generation of games has a lot to live up to if they want to top it.
