Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Hawlucha is a Good Exception to One Rule

The much-anticipated game, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, is getting closer to its release, which means Game Freak is readying new enhancements for Mega Evolution. It’s reasonable to assume that the overdue comeback of this feature would bring a plethora of fresh Pokemon to join in. Following some initial confirmations like Mega Dragonite and Mega Victreebel, the latest inclusion is Mega Hawlucha. Game Freak’s declaration indicates that in its Mega form, Hawlucha will retain its Fighting/Flying type, but with a brand-new wrestling mask and a more muscular build-an excellent decision by Game Freak indeed.

In various versions of Pokemon prior to “Pokemon Legends: Z-A”, the concept of Mega Evolution often involved altering or adding types to a Pokemon, like turning Mewtwo into Psychic/Fighting with Mega Mewtwo X or making Charizard a Fire/Dragon with Mega Charizard X. This mid-battle type switching was significant as it made the Mega Evolutions stand out visually and strategically, offering unique matchup possibilities. However, interestingly, “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” chose not to modify Hawlucha’s type line, which sets it apart from other Pokemon even more distinctively.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A Lets Mega Hawlucha Hang On To Its Identity

When creating Mega Hawlucha, it would have been perfectly sensible for Game Freak to incorporate another type to enhance its character. For example, a Fighting/Dark combination might suit a wrestler Pokémon with a villainous theme, similar to the Fire/Dark wrestling heel-themed Incineroar. Mega Hawlucha’s signature move, Flying Press (originally a Fighting type attack), could also have been more fitting for a Fighting/Dragon evolution. Such combinations and others could have given Hawlucha more versatility in battles, offering players the ability to adjust its type resistances when needed, similar to Terastallization.

Hawlucha’s Type Combo is One of Few

One unique aspect of Hawlucha is its distinctive dual type – Flying and Fighting. It was the initial Pokemon to possess this combo, and so far, only two others have followed suit: Galarian Zapdos, a Legendary that isn’t easily obtained, and Flamigo, a Gen 9 addition that falls short compared to Hawlucha in aspects like design and signature moves. Consequently, Hawlucha is often considered the embodiment of this uncommon type combination. If Mega Hawlucha altered this, it would have compromised a key element of the Wrestling Pokemon’s character.

Hawlucha is also unique as the only Flying-type Pokemon in the Human-Like Egg Group.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve always wished Game Freak would give Hawlucha a twist by introducing two unique Mega Evolutions – one representing a wrestling face and the other embodying a wrestling heel. The former could have retained Hawlucha’s original types, while the latter might have leaned towards Dark or something similar. However, considering that Mega Hawlucha’s name doesn’t suggest an alternate form like Mega Mewtwo and Charizard, it seems unlikely that this wish will come to fruition anytime soon. Game Freak may be focusing on saving Mega Evolution branches for starters, Legendaries, and Mythicals. In the absence of a second Mega Evo option, Hawlucha continues to shine with its Fighting/Flying types.

It’s noteworthy that Mega Hawlucha follows a trend of withholding Mega Evolutions that would result in type changes, much like Mega Dragonite and Mega Victreebel who maintain their original types during mega evolution. Game Freak might be saving up many new Megas with adjusted types for future releases, especially considering the potential authenticity of the leaked Mega Evolutions from Pokemon Legends: Z-A. For now, Hawlucha sticks to its usual type and, in essence, this remains beneficial.
