Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Meganium Gains One Big Buff at a Hefty Cost

Since the unveiling of Pokemon Legends: Z-A last year, there have been numerous leaks revealing new Mega Evolutions and story spoilers. For instance, there are rumors about Lysandre’s potential return and his telepathic connection with Zygarde. However, not all leaks are reliable, as some have already been proven false, like the claim that Zeraora would undergo a Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Nevertheless, new Mega Evolutions seem inevitable, with 26 leaked creatures on the list so far. Players are also expected to encounter Megas for both the starters of Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Generation 6. Mega Meganium is one such leaked creature, and while it’s likely to receive a significant boost, it may come at too great a cost.

Based on recent leaks, it’s been suggested that out of the 26 new Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, only four are expected to receive a secondary type or a new type combination. For instance, Mega Feraligatr is said to become Water/Dragon, reminiscent of Sceptile and Ampharos’ past transformations. On the other hand, Meganium might be gaining Fairy as its secondary type. A dual Grass/Fairy Meganium could be intriguing in both combat and design aspects, offering it significant advantages as well as potential disadvantages.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Leaked Mega Meganium is About to Be Buffed, With an Asterisk Attached

In the game Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the Mega Evolution of Meganium being both Grass and Fairy type is fantastic since it can now inflict damage effectively. Historically, Meganium has been viewed as the least powerful among the Gen 2 starters, particularly in offensive capabilities. On its own, the Grass type isn’t exceptionally strong for attacking, but it shines when combined with other STAB moves of various types to compensate for its weaknesses. Adding Fairy as a STAB type to Meganium is brilliant because it becomes super effective against Fighting, Dark, and Dragon types in addition to Ground, Rock, and Water types that Grass already covers.

In the Pokemon games, Meganium’s historical vulnerability lies in its ability to set up screens, such as Reflect and Light Screen. This feature might not be suitable for a more action-oriented game like Pokemon Legends: Z-A, which switches from turn-based battles to real-time strategy and evading moves. Therefore, Mega Meganium may need to boost its offensive capabilities, with Fairy type being a potential option. However, it’s important to note that incorporating Fairy as a secondary type comes with some significant drawbacks. For instance, it carries a 4x weakness, although it does have two more resistances and one immunity compared to the Grass type.

Type Combination Weaknesses Resistances Offensive
Grass 2x vs. Flying, Poison, Bug, Fire, and Ice 0.5x vs. Ground, Water, Grass, and Electric 2x vs. Ground, Rock, and Water, 0.5x vs. Flying, Poison, Bug, Steel, Fire, Grass, Dragon
Grass/Fairy 4x vs. Poison, 2x vs. Flying, Fire, Ice, and Steel 0.5x vs. Fighting, Ground, Water, Grass, Electric, and Dark, 0x vs. Dragon 2x vs. Fighting, Ground, Rock, Water, Dragon, and Dark, 0.5x vs. Poison, Steel, and Fire

Why The Leaked Mega Meganium May Struggle in PLZA

In essence, if the leaked Mega form of Meganium is accurate and it carries a 4x weakness to poison, this could pose significant issues for Meganium in several ways. Firstly, neither Grass nor Fairy-type Pokemon can inflict effective damage on Poison-types, which limits Meganium’s options for countering these opponents. Secondly, and more critically, Meganium’s moderate Speed stat makes it vulnerable to swift attackers armed with poison moves, even if those moves aren’t STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) attacks.

It’s doubtful that Meganium’s size can protect it from strong Poison attacks given its secondary Fairy type. Additionally, it’s anticipated that three Mega Evolutions leaked in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, as well as several returning ones, will have Poison among their types. This suggests that players may need to devise a strategy against these if they wish to use Meganium in the battle royale of Z-A. At this point, it’s unclear how well Mega Meganium will fare against the new Megas, but it seems likely that all new Megas will be utilized in the battle royale, and Mega Meganium might struggle with some of them.
