Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Zygarde Makes it Harder to Say Goodbye to These 5 Pokemon

Pokemon Legends: Z-A spoilers ahead. Proceed at your own risk.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A is a unique mainline Pokemon game. It continues the story from the games released in Generation 6, five years later, and brings back Mega Evolution. However, it’s unusual because it doesn’t introduce any new Pokemon species. So far, the new Mega Evolutions and the real-time battle system are generating a lot of excitement. Despite this, the game is proving divisive among fans. One point of contention is that while it gives players a special Mega Evolution for Zygarde, it means five other Pokemon won’t be included.

It’s disappointing when new Pokémon games leave out popular creatures or gameplay elements. Pokémon Legends: Z-A is currently receiving negative reviews because it’s missing features fans have come to expect, and some players find the gameplay less engaging than in Pokémon Legends: Arceus or the most recent generation of games. Another significant problem is that the game isn’t fully accessible – certain Pokémon are simply unavailable to catch. While players can obtain Zygarde and Mega Zygarde near the end of the main story (Mission 37), they’ll discover after finishing the game that some Pokémon remain uncaught. Specifically, these Pokémon are not available in the game:

  • Slowpoke
  • Steelix
  • Scizor
  • Slurpuff
  • Aromatisse

In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, evolving Onix and Scyther requires trading while holding a Metal Coat, Slowpoke with a King’s Rock, Spritzee with a Sachet, and Swirlix with Whipped Cream. Because these Pokémon can only evolve through trades and need a specific item, you won’t find them already evolved in the wild.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A is The End of an Era For 5 Pokemon

There are ten Pokemon that need to be traded in order to evolve in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. These are:

  • Haunter evolves into Gengar
  • Kadabra evolves into Alakazam
  • Machoke evolves into Machamp
  • Phantump evolves into Trevenant
  • Pumpkaboo evolves into Gourgeist
  • Slowpoke evolves into Slowking
  • Onix evolves into Steelix
  • Scyther evolves into Scizor
  • Spritzee evolves into Aromatisse
  • Swirlix evolves into Slurpuff

Pokemon Legends: Z-A uses trade codes to simplify trading, especially since no Pokemon are exclusive to specific game versions. However, you still need a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership to trade, so getting all Pokemon requires help from other players.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Wild Zone 20 Spawns Explained

The main story of Pokemon Legends: Z-A attempts to address the issue of rare Pokemon by unlocking the Wild Zone 20 at the end. However, this doesn’t entirely fix the problem, as Wild Zone 20 can generate these creatures at very high levels, and sometimes even as powerful Alpha Pokemon.

Slowking, Steelix, Scizor, Slurpuff, and Aromatisse are Virtually Unobtainable in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, you can find most Pokemon in the wild areas. Gengar, Alakazam, and Machamp are in Wild Zone 20, Trevenant appears as an Alpha in Wild Zone 13, and Gourgeist spawns in Wild Zone 15. This means only five Pokemon – Slowking, Steelix, Scizor, Slurpuff, and Aromatisse – can’t be caught in the game. These five remain trade-exclusive evolutions, even after you’ve obtained Zygarde and Mega Zygarde. Completing the game and getting Zygarde might feel a little disappointing for players who still need these five Pokemon, as it highlights what they’re still missing.

Zygarde is central to the story of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, so it’s logical that you can catch it. However, it feels odd that Pokemon like Slowking, Steelix, Scizor, Slurpuff, and Aromatisse can only be obtained through trading.
