Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Season 7 is Already The Worst Ever (and I’m Talking Franchise-Wide)

I’ve been playing Pokemon Legends: Z-A a lot since it released, and despite its flaws, I really enjoy it. I especially love hunting for shiny Pokemon – I finally managed to get shiny versions of Latios, Latias, Cobalion, Virizion, and Terrakion! The ranked battles in Pokemon Legends: Z-A are also great, and I’ve been enjoying climbing the ladder with the easy-to-use training features. However, the new Season 7 is a really frustrating experience – honestly, it’s one of the worst things that’s happened to me in a Pokemon game.

While some believe the battle system in Pokemon Legends: Z-A doesn’t quite fit the standard VGC format, a competitive community has still sprung up with regular player-hosted tournaments. However, it’s a very different experience from traditional Pokemon competition. Battles happen in real-time instead of turns, teams consist of only three Pokemon, and the rules differ significantly from official games like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Sadly, the rules for Season 7 are arguably the worst in the entire series, and there’s little chance they’ll improve.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A Breaks a Massive Competitive Teambuilding Rule

As a Pokémon fan, I’m really excited about the rewards in Legends: Z-A! If you want things like special Poke Balls and Poke Dollars, definitely check out the ranked battles. But honestly, the biggest draw for me is getting those exclusive Mega Stones – especially Blaziken’s, which is new in Season 7! That said, the competitive scene is getting a little stale. With all Pokémon allowed and the ability to use two ‘restricted’ Pokémon, battles are starting to feel pretty predictable. It’s just… everyone keeps picking the same powerful creatures.

In Season 6 of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, teams could only include one of the very best Pokemon – the most powerful Legendary and Mythical creatures. This made choosing carefully important, as the best choices depended on your team and what your opponents were using. While players could still use up to three Legendary or Mythical Pokemon, only one of the absolute strongest was allowed per team. Even when Pokemon like Xerneas and Kyogre were common and powerful, it was still possible to build effective teams to compete and enjoy the game.

Last season in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, my strongest team included Overqwil, Rotom Mow, and Swampert. I’m still using Overqwil and Rotom Mow in season 7, as they’re effective against powerful Pokemon like Xerneas, Mewtwo, Kyogre, and Groudon.

How Legends: Z-A’s Restricted Pokemon Ruin The Game

As a long-time fan, I’m honestly pretty disappointed with the team-building in Legends: Z-A. They’ve let us use three Legendary and Mythical Pokémon and two restricted ones, and it’s led to the same few powerhouses dominating every match. It’s always Xerneas, Mewtwo, Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza, with a side of Genesect or Darkrai. This is the first time we could theoretically build a whole team of these super-rare Pokémon, but it’s made things way less fun. I’m trying to build creative teams – I even tried a Focus Energy/Scope Lens Kangaskhan – but it’s so hard to win when everyone else is just throwing optimized Life Orb, Focus Sash, and Expert Belt sets on those top-tier Legendaries like Xerneas and Kyogre. It feels like you have to use the best Pokémon to even compete, and that’s just not great.

  • Rayquaza is almost an auto-inclusion in most teams, too, as Mega Rayquaza in Legends: Z-A doesn’t require any held items to Mega Evolve, so it can easily use Focus Sash to be more durable.
  • Geomancy Xerneas with Life Orb can decimate most meta threats even with no supereffective hits, and it’s very durable.
  • Kyogre has access to its Primal version, but the base form remains an amazing pick due to its vast move coverage and incredible stats.
  • Groudon has become one of the most used Ground-type Pokemon, to the point that Garchomp is rarely seen.

I never imagined I’d miss the competitive scene surrounding Garchomp in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, but here we are. Ice-type Pokemon are rarely effective now because Rayquaza is almost always equipped with a Focus Sash, meaning any attack will break it, not just Ice-type moves. However, my biggest issue is that the game has very few commonly used Pokemon; many have become irrelevant, and powerful, restricted Pokemon dominate every match. Season 8 might be even more unbalanced, potentially allowing unlimited restricted Pokemon, but we’ll have to wait and see. Still, Season 7 feels like a low point for competitive Pokemon, as it’s easy to forget about regular Pokemon and battles have become repetitive contests between Legendary Pokemon.
