The Pokemon Trading Card Game has announced three new Mega Pokemon cards coming in the ‘Ascended Heroes’ expansion, and one of them could significantly change how the game is played. This new era of the Pokemon TCG has introduced exciting features, including the return of Mega Evolution – a powerful mechanic that hasn’t been seen in the game since 2016. When a Mega Evolved Pokemon is defeated, the winning player receives three prize cards. The upcoming set seems to be combining popular elements from recent Pokemon TCG releases.

The next big release for the Pokemon Trading Card Game, Ascended Heroes, is scheduled for 2026 and promises exciting new features. Pokemon Company has announced several new Mega Pokemon will be included, with Mega Dragonite ex featured on the set’s packaging. The expansion will also introduce more Stellar Tera Pokemon, Owner’s Pokemon, and a brand-new type of rare card called Mega Attack Rare. Recently revealed, Ascended Heroes will include a trio of popular Mega Pokemon from the latest Pokemon video games.

Pokemon TCG Adding Powerful New Mega Starter Pokemon

The Pokémon Company has revealed three new Mega Pokémon coming in the Ascended Heroes set, featuring evolved forms of the Starter Pokémon from Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Mega Meganium ex will likely be a strong late-game choice for Grass-type decks, boosting damage as more Energy cards are played. Mega Emboar ex offers high damage output—a base of 320—but at a cost, as it also inflicts 60 damage to itself. Mega Feraligatr ex appears to be the most formidable, with an attack that becomes significantly stronger when targeting Pokémon that are already damaged.

The new Mega Feraligatr ex card is expected to be a powerful addition to many existing Pokemon TCG decks, and could be the strongest of the three new ex cards. It works especially well with Munkidori, allowing players to shift damage from their own Pokemon to their opponent’s. Mega Feraligatr has the potential to deal a massive 400 damage, which is among the highest possible in the Pokemon TCG and can easily knock out any opponent’s Pokemon in one hit. It also combines effectively with Baxcalibur, which can quickly provide the energy needed to use Feraligatr’s attacks. The Pokemon TCG’s Ascended Heroes expansion, including this new card, will be released on January 30th.

The Pokemon Trading Card Game Has Lots in Store for 2026

The Pokemon TCG is set for a big update in early 2026 with the release of Ascended Heroes, bringing a wealth of powerful new cards. Fans can look forward to a brand-new Mega Evolution for Charizard, adding to the existing Mega Charizard X and introducing a Mega Charizard Y card. The set will also feature Mega Dragonite ex, a strong card with an Ability that lets players switch their Active Pokemon for free each turn. Finally, the popular Supporter card Boss’s Orders will be reprinted with new artwork featuring Corbeau from Pokemon Legends: Z-A, keeping it legal for competitive Standard play.

While The Pokémon Company hasn’t shared too much yet beyond the Ascended Heroes set, I have a feeling they’re planning something huge. 2026 marks Pokémon’s 30th anniversary – can you believe it’s been three decades since the original games came out in Japan?
