  • Tag-based arcade game Pokemon Mezastar may finally be expanding beyond Japan in the near future.
  • A recently emerged trademark filing suggests that the hit game could soon launch in Indonesia.
  • Pokemon Mezastar was originally released in September 2020 and remains a Japan exclusive to this day.

As a dedicated fan of Pokemon and arcade games, I have been eagerly following the developments surrounding Pokemon Mezastar since its initial release in Japan back in 2020. The game quickly piqued my interest due to its unique tag-based gameplay mechanic and the involvement of Nintendo and Takara Tomy A.R.T.S., two renowned names in the gaming industry.

The popular Japanese arcade game, Mezastar Pokemon, may soon expand its reach based on recent intellectual property disclosures. At present, this specific Pokemon title is exclusively accessible in Japan where it has gained significant popularity.

Title “Pokemon Mezastar”: A contemporary arcade game created by long-term collaborator Takara Tomy A.R.T.S of Nintendo. Originally slated for a mid-2020 launch, it was postponed until September due to the widespread COVID-19 pandemic. The game is housed in an arcade cabinet with a big screen, tangible controls, and a tag dispenser. In “Pokemon Mezastar,” plastic tags serve as the core gameplay element. Players capture Pokemon by engaging them in battles, and then reuse their tags in subsequent plays by positioning them on one of the machine’s lanes.

Pokemon Mezastar May Be Coming to More Countries Soon

About four years after its initial launch, there’s evidence that the well-loved arcade game “Pokémon MEZASTAR & Lukisan” could soon become more accessible to the public. This assumption is based on a recently filed trademark by Nintendo in Indonesia. According to reports from Game Rant, this application was made in July 2024. The trademark isn’t limited to arcade machines alone; it also covers electronic accessories. Given that the original “Pokemon Mezastar” already accommodates various gadgets, this classification is not surprising.

The terms “Pokemon Mezastar” and “Lukisan” in this context haven’t been employed officially by Nintendo before. “Lukisan” originates from Malay and Indonesian languages, meaning “picture,” “painting,” or “drawing.” This term’s inclusion in the trademark might hint at a new variation of “Pokemon Mezastar” Nintendo intends to introduce globally, or it could be a rebranding effort to broaden the game’s reach.

As of mid-July 2024, Indonesia’s intellectual property agency, the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP), has yet to grant approval for Nintendo’s trademark application. However, it is anticipated that this process will be completed by the end of the year. There’s currently no indication that the Japan-exclusive Pokemon arcade game will be launched in any other countries apart from Indonesia.

For several years, Pokemon Mezastar has been a part of notable brand partnerships. One such collaboration was revealed in June 2021 when the game introduced six exclusive McDonald’s Japan tags as a reward for purchasing Happy Meals. Despite being the latest Pokemon arcade game at that time, this won’t be the case for long since Nintendo has announced another comparable game called Pokemon Frienda. The 3v3 battle arcade game is set to debut in select Japanese arcades and shopping centers in the second half of July 2024.
