New information about the Pokémon game, Pokopia, has come to light. Although it’s being promoted as a game only for the new Nintendo Switch 2, it will also be playable on the original Nintendo Switch, but with some limitations.
Pokémon Pokopia is scheduled to launch on March 4, 2026, just after the 30th anniversary of Pokémon. It’s expected to be one of several big Pokémon games coming out next year.
Pokémon Pokopia, first shown in September during Nintendo’s presentation, offers a new and unique way to experience the Pokémon world. Good news for those with the original Switch – they won’t be excluded from playing!
Pokémon Pokopia Supports Gameshare

Nintendo recently revealed in a new Pokémon Pokopia trailer that the game will have a feature called Gameshare, letting Nintendo Switch players team up and play together.
You won’t be able to buy this game directly for the original Nintendo Switch. If you want to play it on the older console, you’ll need to use the Gameshare feature with someone who has a Nintendo Switch 2 and owns the game.
The fine print for Nintendo’s GameShare feature reveals a few key details. Games are playable only while actively in a GameShare session, and a maximum of two players can participate at the same time. Importantly, a Nintendo Switch 2 console must start the GameShare session.
To use GameShare, both Nintendo Switch consoles need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account. Any progress made during a shared session will be saved on the console hosting the game, and the original console won’t save any of that progress.
While long-time Nintendo Switch owners might have been hoping for something different, this does give people a chance to try Pokémon Pokopia if a friend or family member already has it, before deciding whether to buy the game and a new Nintendo Switch 2.
