Pokemon Reveals New Tabletop and Mobile Game, But There’s a Catch

Pokémon is launching a new game in both tabletop and mobile formats, but currently, it’s only available in Japan. While many Pokémon games have been released internationally, this new one might remain exclusive to Japan.

Throughout the history of the Pokemon franchise, many different tabletop games have been released. Some, like the Pokemon Trading Card Game, were completely original creations. Others, such as Pokemon Monopoly and Yahtzee, were existing games that were redesigned with a Pokemon theme. This new game falls into the latter category, but it’s based on a game that most Pokemon fans in Western countries probably haven’t played before.

Pokemon Introducing New Tabletop and Mobile Games

The Pokémon Company is releasing a new game called Pokémon GOITA on December 18th. It’s a Pokémon-themed version of the classic Japanese tile-matching game, Goita. Traditionally, Goita is played with four players, using 32 tiles each with different point values. The goal is to play all your tiles. The Pokémon GOITA trailer shows gameplay where the first player lays down a tile as an ‘Attack,’ and the opponent must defend by matching it with their own tile. This version features Pokémon like Mew, Mewtwo, Raichu, Charizard, Dragonite, Pikachu, and more on the tiles. The physical game, which includes the tiles, a playmat, and a carrying bag, will cost around $19. A free mobile app will also be available, and the official website confirms it won’t include any in-app purchases.

Since Goita isn’t very popular outside of Japan, it’s probably unlikely that Pokemon GOITA will be translated into other languages or released in other countries. However, this isn’t the first time The Pokemon Company has adapted a traditional Japanese game into a Pokemon version. They recently released Pokemon Taruka in July, which is based on the classic Japanese card game Karuta.

Okay, so Pokemon GOITA isn’t really grabbing headlines outside of Japan, but honestly, there’s still so much exciting stuff happening with Pokemon! I’m really hyped for the DLC coming to Pokemon Legends: Z-A on December 10th. And have you heard about Pokemon Pokopia? It’s a new spin-off all about Ditto and it looks super fun – it’s coming out in March 2026! There’s also buzz about Pokemon Wind and Pokemon Wave possibly releasing next year, but I’m trying not to get too excited until Nintendo officially confirms it.
