There was a chance that Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire could’ve had different names.
Based on new information, GameFreak explored different color schemes for Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire besides the current ones. The shades of indigo and crimson have emerged as possibilities.
Uncovered by Farore.gba and Wobbuu on Twitter, intriguing information about the early development of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire has emerged. The pair delved into the game’s files, discovering references to “Indigo Version” and “Crimson Version.” These monikers represent the initial names for the game before the developers settled on Ruby and Sapphire as the final titles.
Wobbuu and I examined some RS files. In those files, we came across the labels “Indigo Version” and “Crimson Version.” These terms are believed to be early designations for what later became known as the Sapphire Version and Ruby Version.

Based on my extensive experience as a long-time fan of video games and their localization processes, I have come to understand that unofficial translations are quite common in gaming communities. I recall numerous instances where fans took it upon themselves to translate game names or character dialogue due to the lack of official localized versions. However, it’s important to acknowledge that these unofficial translations may not always align with the original intent or meaning.
The GBA version of Farore.gba explained that the initial image came from a script named “field\_c102.ev,” which could have been a placeholder or the intended title for Rustboro’s Grunt flee event. The second image originated from “cave\_d0701s.ev,” a potential script for the Mt. Chimney feud between Aqua and Magma.
Additionally, Farore.gba noted that the names Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire were unveiled at Festa 2002 in July, while the release dates were set in October 2002. Regardless, Pokemon Indigo and Crimson remain strong possibilities for Game Freak’s future projects.
