A fan-made sequel to Pokemon Ruby is coming out soon, more than twenty years after the original game was released. Pokemon Ruby is considered one of the best Pokemon games ever made, and many fans still rate it highly compared to newer games from Game Freak and Nintendo.
Although Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire successfully reintroduced the original third-generation games, they don’t quite capture the same nostalgic feeling as the originals. The Hoenn region boasted an impressive 135 new Pokemon back in 2002, and many fans feel the story was particularly captivating – perhaps even unmatched in later games. This is where the fan-made sequel to Pokemon Ruby comes in, aiming to recapture that original magic.
Pokemon Ruby 2 Continues the Original Story in an Unexpected New Way
Developer King Cradi is nearing completion of their fan-made update to Pokemon Ruby, a project they’ve been working on for over a year. This “what-if” story imagines what would happen if Team Magma succeeded in their plans, causing Groudon to dry up much of the Hoenn region and create new land. Pokemon Ruby 2 will include both familiar and completely new locations to explore. For instance, Lilycove City will be deserted, and a new Dark-type Gym has been added, meaning players will need to adjust their strategies and teams from the original Pokemon Ruby game.
King Cradi is creating an impressively ambitious fan-made version of Pokemon Ruby 2. It will include all 255 Pokemon, complex puzzles, new locations to explore, and a noticeably higher level of difficulty. He aims to make it the best possible fan-made game, and is asking the community for help with graphics and music. While different from the recently leaked information about future Pokemon games, it’s designed to capture the classic, nostalgic feel that many older players enjoy.
Okay, so I was a little worried about where the story was going with Pokemon Ruby 2, but I’m actually really excited to hear that King Cradi’s next game will be Pokemon Sapphire 2! It seems like he’s planning a story where Team Aqua actually won – which means a lot of Hoenn will probably be underwater or totally wrecked. Some fans might be disappointed that he’s not doing huge redesigns of the Pokemon – like that cool flying Diglett everyone was making fan art of – but honestly, I’m okay with that if it means a great story!

The popularity of pet battling extends beyond just Pokémon fans. The recent update to No Man’s Sky, called Xeno Arena, now lets players collect and battle creatures, similar to Pokémon. This shows there’s a real demand for these types of games, even for players who don’t own a Nintendo console to play traditional Pokémon games.
