Players of *Pokémon Scarlet and Violet* can get a free, shiny version of either Koraidon or Miraidon through a giveaway running until October 15, 2025. The giveaway requires visiting a GameStop or EB Games store to receive a code card, which can then be redeemed for the shiny Legendary Pokémon in the game. While this is the first time fans can obtain these shiny Pokémon, many are finding it difficult to participate because the codes are only available in physical stores.
The *Pokémon* series often gives away free items and rare Pokémon, and recently players could get special, shiny versions of Chi-Yu, Wo-Chien, Chien-Pao, and Ting-Liu through an online download. Sometimes, getting these gifts requires a visit to a specific location to receive a code, and that’s the case this time. However, this method is causing frustration, as some fans are unable to get the code and are disappointed.
Pokemon’s Shiny Koraidon and Miraidon Giveaway Buries an Exciting Series First in Controversy
Fans Are Struggling to Get Event Codes from GameStop
The recent upset over the Koraidon and Miraidon promo cards stems from GameStop receiving a very limited number of them. Many fans went to their local stores hoping to get a code card, but were told the store only received 50 and had already given them all out. Adding to the frustration, some customers reported that GameStop was requiring a purchase and limiting each person to only one card.
Scalpers Are Re-Selling Codes Online
GameStop limited the distribution of event codes to one per customer to stop people from buying them up and reselling them online. However, scalpers still managed to get some cards, and now many are being sold on eBay for much more than they’re worth. Because GameStop only received a limited number of cards, scalpers quickly realized they could profit from the high demand for the rare, shiny Koraidon and Miraidon Pokemon, leaving many fans unable to get one for themselves.
The Shiny Koraidon and Miraidon Event Echoes the Broader Community Sentiment Toward Scalpers
For years, scalpers have been a problem for the Pokémon community, especially when it comes to the Pokémon Trading Card Game. With the recent increase in popularity of collecting Pokémon cards, a secondary market of resellers has emerged. This makes it incredibly difficult to purchase new releases, like pre-orders for the Phantasmal Flames set, as scalper bots often buy them up quickly. Now, this issue is spreading to other areas of the Pokémon world, with scalpers even targeting giveaways for the Scarlet and Violet video games.
Some Pokémon fans are unhappy with how this event is being handled and are letting The Pokémon Company know by submitting requests through their official support channels.
Pokemon Has an Easy Solution to Prevent Future Giveaway Controversies Hidden in a Forgotten App
As a Pokémon fan, it’s been really frustrating trying to get limited-edition physical goodies lately, but it turns out The Pokémon Company actually solved this problem years ago! Back in 2019, they released the Pokémon Pass app. It was a great system where you could get event codes just by going to events and either sharing your location or scanning a QR code. I remember using it to get special Pokémon like Mewtwo in *Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee*, shiny Solgaleo and Lunala in *Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun*, and *Ultra Moon*, and even shiny Toxtricity in *Sword and Shield*. It was a much easier way to participate in events, and I wish they’d bring it back!
The Pokemon Pass app was removed from app stores in 2023 and is no longer used for Pokemon giveaways. However, a similar app could be helpful to replace physical giveaway codes, which are often resold at inflated prices. Recent issues with the latest event have shown that Pokemon Pass was a good idea and could be useful if brought back.
